I am planning a ceremony with just our parents, so 3 guests total. The chapel has a piano. Rev. Shulte is the officiant. I know of a pianist who charges $150. That seems crazy to me for such a small wedding. What have others done about music for elopement in Savannah? I can’t ask a guest to use an iPod, and I really have my heart set on live music. I wish I could find a young person who would be excited to have an audience and earn a few bucks. Can anyone let me know how much your musicians are charging for ceremony music?

I am a pianist/piano teacher, so I have to admit to you that it’s hard for me to respond to this one without bias. First things first, I don’t think that $150 is too much for a small wedding – no matter the size of the wedding, a gig is a gig – the pianist has to take the time out of their day to get to and from your wedding, and I imagine the amount of music he/she plays is still the same.
All of that being said, if you’re wanting to save money – I would try music students. Start from the local colleges/universities, and if you have no luck there, maybe you could even try asking the pianist that you know if he/she has a student who would be willing to do the job for less!
Hope this helps. 🙂

Check with SCAD’s musical department.

I ended up checking around with a couple of other people, and it seems like $200 and up is the going rate. So, I settled on the $150 pianist, and I am extremely happy!
@pengoala: Your point did not fall on deaf ears. You are absolutely right. I was early in the planning, and was getting really frustrated because of having “sticker shock” with everything bridal. In the end, the pianist is going to be a beautiful addition to my little ceremony, and a real treat for my guests. I couldn’t imagine getting married without an actual musician of some sort at the ceremony! So, I am happy I found this guy, and I am really excited to hear the arrangements he comes up with for the songs I have selected.

@MissStudio: May I ask what Pianist you used? I’m getting married at the chapel as well in Tybee 🙂 Are you also having a violinist???
