Hello everyone! I’ve been addicted to this site for a wile now, but this is my first official post! How exciting. 🙂
Anywho. I need advice on our ceremony music. I got very lucky- an old Navy buddy of my dad’s is now a wedding DJ and he has agreed to do our wedding basically for “whatever we want to pay”. Awesome, right? But now I’m faced with a dilemma. Obviously we’ll have him for the reception, but should we have him play for the ceremony? Part of me thinks it’s the smart thing to do but the other part of me super wants a violinist for the ceremony.
Basically our wedding is completely outdoors at the zoo. We’re trying to keep it pretty simple and casual. And our budget is “the least amount we can pay, but still make it a nice wedding”.
What would you do? Save the $300 and just have the DJ play the ceremony too. Or dish out the extra money for a violinist?

@kcr526: I need to qualify that I am a classical pianist myself, and am totally biased towards live acoustic music for your walk down the aisle. We had my DJ equip our ceremony with a sound system and a mic on Darling Husband and our officiant so that everyone could hear our vows, but that was all he did. On the side, we hired a string quartet.
All this being said, I think a DJed ceremony could be great as well – if you are looking to save money, I think that would be a fine option! But if your heart is telling you violinist, I say go with it. 🙂

I know how you feel!! I was actually going to hire both. One for the ceremony and one for the reception. But when i got to looking into prices i found it would cost $400-$700 to have a violinist play just during the ceremony for 30mins-1 hour. So that killed that dream. I am going to have my DJ play the music during the ceremony but i am still sticking with violins etc. He will play the classical music for the ceremony. Win WIn!

@kcr526: I hired student musicians – 300$ for a string trio for the ceremony, which was WAY better than what I was quoted for professionals. I listened to some of there stuff on you tube and it was fabulous. I had my heart set on live musicians for the ceremony bc I kept having nightmare visions of the ipod music not starting up for my walk down the aisle! Haha that’s just me being neurotic though 🙂

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
@ashleyr0512: I think if I do have the DJ play for the ceremony, I’m going to request he use music with violins as well. It really could be a win win!
@Weetzie: I didn’t think to hire students. I’ll have to look in to that!

We’re using our DJ for our ceremony music. . . but we’re also having a pretty non-traditional wedding. I don’t want any instrumental music. I think it’s personal preference!
