It would work, assuming the ceremony site, FI’s father’s house, and most of your guests live in roughly the same area.  If lots of your guests have to drive in from out of town, they’d basically have to get a hotel for two nights (Fri and Sat) to attend both parts of your wedding.  You’d probably end up with lots of people opting to attend one part or the other instead of both.

My friend had a Church ceremony on a Thursday and a reception two weeks later and a cabin wedding (that elderly etc couldn’t make it to) in between the two where people camped.  I didn’t get to go, but it looked wonderful.  I think you can make whatever you need to work, work.

Fiance and I were thinking about doing the same thing. We’re Catholic and our ceremonies run 1.5 hours! We were thinking of doing the ceremony the day before for those that want to come and then doing reception the following evening with maybe a short ceremony (if any) at the same venue as the reception.

But part of us feels like it’s just too much trouble to try to coordinate everything. We’re still finalizing the venue so we’ll be making that decision pretty soon.

Good luck! I’m sure you 2 will do what’s best for you and your friends/family.
