@Weddinghelpneeded:  Does your mom know what the processional will look like? Has she complained to you? Generally as a rule if you are wondering if somebody would be offended by something it usually is the easiest to find out by just asking them! 🙂

I’ve never seen a bride get walked down by anyone other then her dad. If her dad is not in the picture, then typically a brother or other male relative walks her down, definitely never seen a mom walk the bride down.

I find it strange that she is getting offended by it.

In some traditions, both parents are supposed to escort the bride (this is usually done at Jewish weddings, for example). It’s also kind of nice for balancing out the gender roles – as sweet as it is for the bride to be escorted by her father, it also has unavoidably sexist origins.

IMO it takes nothing away from one’s father to have both parents do the escorting … and in your case it sounds like it would go a long way towards keeping the peace. And as far as hiding your dress … everyone will see it, no need to worry about that, and for the few moments it will take to walk down the aisle, trading your mom’s happiness for a better view of the dress seems kind of shallow (sorry). In your place, I would have both parents escort me.

Hmmm … that almost seems like you end up punishing your FI’s dad because your mom can’t seem to accept your effort to compromise.

I would tell your mom that she can choose to walk with you and your dad, or not walk with you guys, but that it’s FI’s decision how to walk with his parents, and that part doesn’t concern her.

All you can do is try. If you’re attempting to meet her halfway, well, at some point it becomes up to her to cover her half of the ground.
