Our ceremony and reception are at different places. SO wants a later reception. We are allowed to have up to 5 hrs for reception and he thinks we should do 6-11. Im stuck on a ceremony time! The bar is going to be open during dinner so people can still get drinks so I almost dont see a point in cocktail hour unless it is more for us to get our pics done during that hour?? Im confused!! I think the whole timing of ceremony and recpeption cocktail hour and dinner confuses us.

Our ceremony will be at 4pm and our reception at 6pm. We are allowed to stay at the reception until midnight. The two things are at different places but only a 10 minute drive apart.
So if we allow for the ceremony to start a bit late (I want to make sure everyone is there!) and then it goes for half an hour it should end around 4.45pm. There would then be about an hour before guests will start moving to the reception venue. During that hour we plan to have something at the ceremony venue like juice and brownies, and we will mingle and talk to guests and have photos taken with friends. We may leave for some photos, however we plan on doing first look photos before the ceremony, and possibly even doing ALL the formal photos before the ceremony, so that we have time to stay and talk with people.
There will be about half an hour of ‘cocktail hour’ at the reception venue, really just so we have a chance to get some photos in and take a breather. Then at about 6.30pm the couple will make their entrance and the fun can begin 🙂 cocktail hour is usually to give you more time for photos, so if all your photos are done you don’t necessarily need one at all.
tl;dr: it comes down to when you do your photos. If you do the majority before the ceremony, you could move straight from ceremony to reception. If you are doing them after the ceremony, you will need a lot more time and may want to have something for guests to do like a cocktail hour.
