Hi Kiwi…

For me…I got my license in the mail in a week

First stop was my copier and I made about 20 copies of it.

Went to the ssn office and applied for my ssn (took another week to receive my new ssn card)

Then, went to the IL DMV and got my new driver’s license

Stopped by HR to add my husband to my benefits (since you only have 30 days from the event and all they need is a marriage license to do so) but to change your name, you need to wait for the ss card

Stopped by  my bank and had my name changed on numerous accounts

mailed/fax out my copies to my airlines mileage, credit cards, and many many account (I’ve lost track) – some places are nice and you can just change your name over the phone or Internet

When I got my ssn card, changed my name at work and got a new email address on top of going to the post office to mail off my new passport application to change my name…

I’ll let you know if there is anything else that I can think of.  I woudn’t recommend taking off a whole day – maybe half a day to at least stop by the SS office and the DMV.

It took about a month for our certificate to come (I think).  The funny thing is that in Ohio, they mail you these little laminated cards as certified copies and no one in NJ will believe they are real, so they want the form with the raised seal that we signed at the county judge’s office (meaning just the license– we signed it before we got married).

Anyway, I went to the SS office in NJ, but it turns out you can apply for your new SS card by mail, you just need a copy of your driver’s license.  And then you can go get a new driver’s license with just the certificate and proof of address (and your old license).  It’s been 3 weeks, though, and I still haven’t gotten my new SS card, even though I applied in person.

I still have to do the banks, credit cards, etc.

In my town (Norwalk, CT), the license doesn’t automatically come. I got to go to Town Hall and pay $10 to get a copy of one.
