I had a big chalkboard seating board.  I went looking in thrift stores for a cheap, nicely designed frame, regardless of the photo in it.  I spent abour $12 at value village getting a lovely frame with an ugly picture.  I got it home and painted it with different paints, distressed the frame, etc, in our colours.  For the cardboard part I bought foam board at michaels, spray painted it with chalkboard paint, let it dry, did a second layer in some areas and then added some chalky distress and wiped it with an eraser to give that chalkboard look before I drew on it with chalkboard markers for our seating chart.  If you look for “How to write on a chalkboard” or something similar in pinterest there are lots of interesting ways to almost stencil on the font you want so you just have to trace.  After that I just slid it into the frame, put the back on and tada – ready to go on an easel!

Hope this helps.  My big tip with the chart is to get two chalkboard markers – one thicker and one as thin as you can.  Have a slightly damp rag ready in case you make a mistake. 🙂  And if you do make a mistake don’t wipe the board too hard or you’ll have to respray paint when it comes off on the rag.
