Here is my dilemma! I am a Mom of a gorgeous 16 month old girl.
I was fortunate to have a whole year maternity leave, and now I am back to work full time. I am bored, annoyed and frustrated by my current job. There is no hope for a pay raise (it doesn’t pay very well), the business is suffering, no room for advancement for me- and having a degree in Sociology and coursework in Social Work it is also not what I went to school for. The positives are I work Monday- Friday 8-4:30 which are similar hours to my SO. But I wish so badly I had more time for my darling girl, who spends everyday in Daycare.
I recently have been given an opportunity to work in a women’s centre, but it is casual hours (better pay), part time call in. More in my field, an opportunity for me to gain new skills and new networks, but unreliable hours and midnight shifts- which means I would have to sleep through the day.
I don’t know what to do. The new position I could work less hours, but it would be difficult to handle the night shifts. This is the first opportunity I have been given after 6 months of sending out my resume.
All I want is to make money and have more time with my family. But we are also planning a wedding, which costs $$ so at the moment I can’t afford to reduce my pay. I may have to work both jobs for a while if I decide to take it… which makes me sad about the time I will miss with my little one.
Would you take the on call casual part time work? If it was in something you like and the first opportunity you had? What would you do?
Thanks ladies! xx
