Changing last name logistics

As long as the name on your ID matches the name on your ticket, you’ll be fine. I changed my name legally with social security over a year ago and also updated my driver’s license at that time, but I’ve continued flying under my maiden name and using my global entry card for ID (which has my maiden name on it) because I’ve been too bored to deal with updating my name for TSA precheck lol. I’ve been on dozens of flights during this time on many different airlines and have never had a problem. If you’re really worried you could bring your marriage certificate with you when you fly – I did this the first couple times cause I was paranoid – but no one ever asked to see it.

Re: driver’s license, why not just get a brand new one now with your married name since it’s gonna expire soon anyway?

bertchelbee :  don’t change your name on your ticket or license and you won’t have any issue flying under your maiden name. I’m a Minnesota resident also and they told me it will take upwards of 60 days before I get my new license (we eloped August 18). However, keep in mind, you may need a photo ID to change your name on other things.

It has definitely been an interesting adventure making sure everything is changed. Good luck, Bee!

As long as you don’t try and use your married name on your ticket, you’ll be fine. Your name just has to match on your ticket and ID and/or passport.

Also, if you have an existing account with an airline where you receive miles/points, you won’t be able to change your name on that account (and therefore your tickets) anyway until you send them official documentation (new ID and marriage certificate). I just had to do this with my airline accounts; it was either that or create a new account and lose all my points.

I don’t think you’ll have to get another ID in December if you get one now. At least in Ohio, they treat it like renewing early and the expiration date gets extended.

But as far as flying goes, the name on your ticket is going to have to match the name on your identification, so if you’re flying under your maiden name, I’d wait to renew your license.

bertchelbee :  That’s annoying! I agree with PPs, just wait until your ID expires to change everything and fly with your maiden name. It will be less of a hassle.
