Okay, I am just shocked to hear this!  I mean, I’m not from Florida or anything (I did that exact change in California comfortably and easily), but I can’t believe that it would still be that way anywhere in the states!  Could you try to call back and speak to someone else?

@jmb2012:

I am dealing with a similar problem. In California I wanted to change my middle name to my nickname and then take my spouse’s last name but they said it requires a legal name change to do that, which would cost a minimum of $500 plus lawyer fees and a mountain of paperwork. I would have to go to court, then “publish” the name change in the paper. Sigh…guess I will just forget about the middle name for now and just change my last name.

It’s the same in New York State 🙁  You can take your spouse’s last name through marriage, but you need a court order to change your middle name.  No advice, just sympathy!

Oh geez good to know I may come across this as well!  I haven’t started researching any of that yet!

I did this in Florida.  I went into the local Social Security office in Volusia county, and gave them my marriage cert, my maryland drivers license, and birth certificate.  I changed my name from First, Middle, Maiden to First, Maiden, Married name.  They mail you the SS card a few weeks later, and you can bring taht when you get your license as proof that you live at the address.

I sat longer waiting to be helped then I did filling out the form.

Go to a different office (like Volusia) if you can.  I had the same issue with the Orlando office but I know there are many other brides in other Florida counties that didn’t have that issue with the Social Security office so I don’t know how this can be a rule in one place but not another.

I am looking into it because it looks like you have to go to the Orange County office and I know they are trained not to change the middle name but they cannot specify what law or code requires it.  It is obviously not federal law or it would be the same in every state.  It can’t be state law since the social security administration is a federal agency that falls under federal law.  I didn’t have the time to argue it the first time I got married but this time I think I will go to the office prepared.

I sent a complaint to Social Security requesting the code/law on name changes.  I will post it when and if I get a response.

i’m in california and here you need to change your middle and last name to what you want it to be on the marriage liscense.  if you don’t change it on that piece of paper and decide you want to later on, you have to get a court order.  i was able to change both my last and middle name but i had to make sure it was right on the liscense and certificate.
