Here’s what I did-

1. Waited for marriage certificate

2. Went to Social Security office in CA you can’t change your Driver’s License until youre SSN is changed. (takes 24-48 hrs to update). (No Charge)

3. Went to DMV changed name with DMV. ($22 bucks….Yikes)

4. Called credit card companies, Car Loan, and utilities and bank to change my last name, each were different in their requirements…No Charge.

Hope this helps.

This will depend on the state. Are you in NJ?

I followed the same steps as mija22.  But I waited a while between my Social Security change and the DMV because we were moving to a different state.

Some banks only needed my new license and some needed copies of the marriage certificate.

Don’t forget to change the beneficiaries on your insurance policies and your accounts that you aren’t making joint accounts.

I’m going to the DMV and Social Security office tomorrow because I get out of work early and I can’t wait!

I threw the idea around of hyphenating, but I decided I want to completely change to my husband’s name.

I’m excited!  Laughing

@Rubbs: That is exciting! Let us know if you run into any complications that we should prepare for… You know, since April is right around the corner… haha

@Miss Otter:  Actually I just found out I can’t do both in the same day.  I have to go to the SS office first, fill out forms, show identification, and I should get my new card in 2 weeks… Then I can go to the DMV… the only problem I’m having with the DMV is that they need proof of residency, but I don’t get bills sent to my apartment because the mailbox is outside, and I don’t trust it.  I still use my mom’s address for bills.  I wonder if they’d accept coupons I get with that address on it… like NY & Co or BB&B?
