No one here can definitively tell you what you need to do/send. Read the requirements and follow them.

I am about to do the same thing. I am a us citizen and need to update my married last name before our baby is born in September. I was hoping someone else could also tell us their experience with doing it by mail and how long it took? How it was sending in your passport etc.

I’ve also been wondering about this. I’m glad someone asked.

You can use your passport as more than one “document”, ie, citizenship and identity. I would be nervous about sending all of your documents because of the potential backlog, however you said you have a passport so I would send the passport with your marriage cert/license and keep your DL for identification while your passport is gone. Make photocopies of all your documents to retain for yourself before sending. They will mail everything back to you with your new card.

@MargaritaVille:  I’m curious about this. I’m a citizen. They say no copies. Do I send them my actual drivers license?

Do you have an immigration attorney? That might be the best bet since what if there are temporary changes that allow for different procedures.

@europeanbee88:  I sent my request to change my name with SS at the beginning of May. They confirmed my request May 6 and I got my card today.

EDIT: I sent my original marriage license and a COPY of my passport.

@europeanbee88:  it probably depends on your local SS office too. I’m up in NorCal and not in a major city so turn around may be quicker than if you’re in a major metro area.

@coffeebean87:  The photocopies are for YOU to keep while your original documents are gone. You have to send originals to SS. Do you have a passport?

@europeanbee88:  That was how I read it, as well. I’d be wary to send my Driver’s License off for several weeks. I think if you do not have a passport, then you would probably be better to go in.
