The first time I was married was 1996. I don’t remember it being so difficult to change my name then! This week, I’ve gotten started on this long process. Friday I spent an hour in the social security office. That wasn’t too bad.
Today I spent 2 hours at the Dept. Public Safety changing my driver’s license. What a circus! I tried going up there 2 or 3 other times last week and the line was out the door. Only difference was that was in the afternoon when it was 100+ degrees out. Today I was there as soon as they opened, and there were about 40 people in line outside, not to mention the 50+ people already in line inside! I decided to stick it out because 1) I need my new license to change bank info, etc. and 2) at least it was only 80 degrees out since it was 8am.
People watching in line was great though. A fight almost broke out, and the DPS worker threatened to get a trooper out there. Made the waiting time more interesting.
It didn’t occur to me that the reason it took so long was because school is out and all of the teenagers in the county were there to take their driving tests.
How long did it take you?

I didn’t have to do this since I didn’t change my name but I did have to wait 2 hours last year to change my plates.
I had a coworker who took the day off to do this and waited at the Driver Licence place (two different offices in CO) for 6 hours. I got my new licence right before work so I was at the door 5 minutes before they opened. That only took a half hour but I wasn’t getting a name change just exchanging my MA licence for a CO one.

@Mrs Christopher: 6 hours?! I think I’d have been so cranky. When I got to work, my boss told me he went to a different DPS facility one time and it took him 4 hours. Insane!

Social Security was maybe 45 minutes- not bad, except I didn’t bring anything to read, so I ended up watching the George Takei/Patty Duke commercial about 20 times.
MVA- Ugh! THREE hours! And it was the second time I went- first time I didn’t have the court-issued license copy (luckily there’s a first line you go through, where they verify that you have all your documents before you get a number.) I went around lunch time, and you’re right- lots of teens getting their licenses that day.
Luckily, I ended up with the nicest MVA worker EVER- made me adjust my hair and took two photos- the best driver’s license photo I’ve ever had.

@rebwana: That George Takei video was driving me crazy!
I saw another worker next to me tell the lady to fix her bangs. ha!

@GFerg: I just sent my info to Social Security and got my new card in about 2 weeks. The only reason I had to go into SOS was because my brithday was the month I got married and I had to actually renew my DL. It was about 45 mins so not even close to 6 hours!! That is insane!

I guess I got really lucky. When I went to change my name back to my maiden name, it took about 5 minutes at SS and not more than 15 at the DMV.
