LauritaNYC :  My middle name was on both my SSC and birth certificate. When I filled out the forms at social security, I just wrote on the middle name line my middle name + maiden name. Under new last name, I wrote my new married name. It all worked out, no questions asked.

Hello! This is a great thread! I’m hoping to clarify one part of this discussion.

In New York, if you want to drop your old MIDDLE name all together, is that possible? For example, can you go to SS and fill out your new name as FIRST MAIDEN HUSBANDLAST and just never write the old MIDDLE?

Thanks in advance for the help!

tlcr33 : I hope you see this as I know it has been some time since you posted in this thread! If not, maybe someone else can help! I got married May 2016 (a while ago, I know). Since then, we have sold our aparment, bought a house etc- It hasnt been the right time to start playing with this name change process. I am finally able to concentrate on it now.

Like previously stated the goal is : SS card, Passport then bring both to the DMV.

My plan is to make my name “FIRST / MAIDEN LAST/ MARRIED LAST. It seems like the Social Security Step is pretty simple. However, when I googled the next step (passport) a few red flags came up. It says if you are changing your name you need something supporting the change such as a marriage license. My Marriage license obviously was filled out before we were married (before the name change). So it doesnt support FIRST /  MAIDEN LAST/ MARRIED LAST. They said if it doesnt match then you need to get a court order or something to have it changed in order for it to support the change for your passport; is this true?

Did they give you trouble with getting your passport re-issued in your new name even though it didn’t reflect that name on your marriage certificate?
