You can skip the inactive week and go straight into a new pack.  I did this when we went on a cruise.  If you do it too much, you may get some spotting, but it’s okay to skip a week every once and a while.  (My mom is an OB/GYN nurse and said they tell patients this all the time)

I’ve been on the extended cycle pills that you are talking about for a few years now and I LOVE them.  That being said, I know a lot of people have problems with them.  I’ve been blessed in that none of the pills I’ve ever taken have given me any kind of problems though.

The PPs are right in saying that you can skip the inactive pills of the prescription you’re on now.  That is essentially the same thing as the extended cycle pills.

I think you can only skip the inactive pills if your pill is one dose of horomones for the whole month – I think you can’t do this with a tri-phasic pill (something you need to ask your doctor about – she could even tell you that with a phone call without you coming in). I think TriNessa is tri-phasic, yes? 3 different does taken for one week each, and then one week of placebos?

@crayfish:  Oh, good call.  I don’t know the difference.  Definitely talk to your doctor!

If you decide to give it a try, at least you’re doing it now, and your wedding is several months away.  That way you’ll be able to see if it works for you.  I just tried going on the BCP (Yaz) for the very same reason (I wasn’t on the pill before, but wanted to alter my cycle so was going to take it for a couple months in a row).  That particular pill didn’t work for me…17 day periods aren’t cool.  But, maybe it messed up my cycle enough to change things for the wedding…

And, I love that your poll says “embrace your period” haha….reminds me of a kotex commercial. 🙂

I believe there is a way to do it with triphasic pills, you just have to do it a certain way. If you skip your period a few times now, you won’t have to skip it for your wedding (therefore no worries of breakthrough bleeding) since you will have shifted everything.

Edit: I double checked, and you can skip periods on triphasics. Personally, I would shift it two weeks by doing this with your next pack:

    Week 1

    Week 2

Week 3 (Ignore week 4, start new pack immediately but go backwards)

    Week 3

    Week 2

Week 1 (ignore week 4, start new pack immediately, going forwards)

    Week 1

    Week 2

    Week 3

Week 4, carry on as normal for all future pill packs. Recalculate your cycle and you will see that your period will now show up before your wedding and honeymoon.

I am in the same exact situation! I asked my doctor and she said that with my birth control (tri-sprintec), she does not recommend skipping the period “inactive” week, but that it should be fine to do it just once. She just doesnt recommend doing it often.

I was in the same boat!  I’m on a triphasic pack and my obgyn nurse Bridesmaid or Best Man said I can do the skip the placebo thing and it will make me skip my period.  But instead, we were fortunate enough to just move the honeymoon to the following week!  We want to begin trying right away (my last pill works out to be the day after the wedding!)  and I didn’t feel like messing up my cycle, and we hadn’t booked our tickets yet, so it worked out.  But I would definitely try the placebo skip and avoid a period on your honeymoon!  Good luck!

Ask you doctor. Most likely you can just skip your inactive (period) pills without a problem.

@Sugaree:  This.  I don’t take the special 4periods per year ones.  i just take the active ones of normal 21 day packs only.  My OB/GYN says it’s ok if I don’t have a period ever but I have some medical issues made worse by periods.  I’d talk to your doc and see if you can mess with it a little bit.  Good luck!
