bluebirdie:  I am in a similar situation. We got married a few months ago, but I held off on doing the name change stuff until now since we just moved to our new state of residence. I did change my name with the social security office beforehand, but that was more for my employer’s sake than my personal preference. It takes about a week for them to process although if they screw up like mine did, it could be longer.

As long as you have your marriage certificate with you, your new state’s DMV and other businesses can change it. It’s like killing two birds with one stone! I did have an issue with one bank saying that they needed my driver’s license to also have the name change before they could change it in their system. It’s a cumbersome experience, but again, as long as you have your marriage certificate, you can get it done.

I changed my name with everything except my driver’s license before moving and the state was fine with it.

bluebirdie: Since the Social Security office is federal you can do that in State B and transfer drivers license to State B along with name change at the same time. Go on Social Security website and it will tell you what documents you need to bring and you can fill out your paperwork ahead of time and print it. Your new local DMV may have the forms online to fill out ahead of time and print as well. Just an FYI: With restrictions on travel and flying… if you are moving fairly soon after the wedding put airline tickets and other paperwork in your maiden name. You can’t do any name changing until you get the marriage license and when traveling you’ll need your picture ID to match the name on your airline tickets. It’s easier to do your name change after you travel. I got married a month ago and I’m still dealinag with the name change issue and trying to get it all done before I have to present documents for a new job next week.
