I was only at the social security office for like 45 minutes. But they didn’t give you a slip that you can use at the DMV? They gave me one so I didn’t have to wait for my card to come in the mail.

Your DMV requires your SS Card to process a name change?  Here in Michigan, I just need to provide my current driver’s license and proof of my name change (such as the marriage license.)

But yeah… I’m not looking forward to changing my last name…

Ohh yes… I tried to go to the SS office before a dentist appointment, since I live about 45 minutes away from them and wanted to get it done in one trip. I gave myself 2-3 hours there thinking that’d be enough time.  Well, the whole time I was there, they got through like SIX people!!!!  There was still like 4 more ahead of me when I finally couldn’t wait anymore and had to go to my appointment.  I could see there were 3 people working at the windows, but 2 of them kept disappearing leaving just the one for most the time.  I was SOOOOO mad I called up my husband screaming like a mad person.  I told him forget it, I didn’t care if I change my name, I’m not going back to that place… unless… he wanted to go there right now and pull a ticket and wait there in my place while I was at the dentish.  He did.. and I got back an hour and half later… and STILL had to wait an hour!  I HATE THAT PLACE!!!!!

DMV was easy.  I didn’t bother doing that until a year later and only did it cause I bought a new car and the insurnace company wouldnt insnure it unless my licence was corrected.  I went there when it opened one morning and waited about 20 minutes.

I waited about 20 – 30 minutes at SS (and I brought my mom to have someone to chat with while I waited) and I got a slip/receipt that allowed me to change my license the same day. I had a similar wait time at the DMV. Easy-peasy.

I only spent 40 minutes (total, based on the meter at my car) at SS. Haven’t gone to the DMV yet, waiting for my passport to come back (a few more weeks) since I’m also changing states and want/need an extra proof of ID w/ photo before doing so. Also I know it will take an entire Saturday and I haven’t had one free yet. It hasn’t been a huge hassle yet because I haven’t DONE much yet LOL.

I’m actually a bit nervous about this… I have an international trip scheduled for 6 weeks after our wedding, and I’m worried about getting everything settled with my new name in time… Passport and visa… Should I be worried ?

I went to the SS office first thing in the morning, so I wasn’t there long, but I had to wait 24 hours for them to process the change, then come back the next day for the slip to take to the DMV.

@ivoryowl:  I would have booked the trip under the maiden name, and left the passport and stuff alone until after the trip.  There’s no telling how long the passport will take to come back with your married name, especially if you have to wait on your marriage certificate to come back before you can send in to get a new passport with your married name.

@strawbabies:  thanks for the quick reply, that is exactly what I’m debating… lm really looking forward to changing my name, and I don’t really want to want 6 weeks before I change it… Ugh not sure!

@ivoryowl:  I wouldn’t book the travel in your married name because getting everything back int that time frame is iffy.  I just did my passport renewal and it took about 3 weeks, but I already have had my record of name change in the system for a while.

At SS, it only took me about an hour.  I did my DL later because we were moving to another state and I didn’t want to pay twice.

@MrsSaltWaterTaffy:  thanks! To make the timing work, I was planning on rushing my passport, so it will take ~2 weeks, and the visa says 10 days… I didn’t realize the marriage license takes a while to get though… How long do I count on for that?

Everything with changing my name is a hassle. It’s hard enough for me to just get copies of my marriage certificate because I moved out of state after the wedding. I have to go get a sworn statement notarized and have my ID copied before they’ll even send me them. So annoying!

@ivoryowl:  My marriage license took a week to come in the mail, but I think that is on the short side.  Honestly, I wouldn’t do it, it’s not worth the hassle to me.
