I say before. Your bank should be able to link it the names together, as should any credit cards etc, and it will just be one more thing you have to change your name on after. I have changed my name everywhere else except for getting a new passport and I haven’t done our land title yet because the office is annoyingly out of my way.

They use your social security number to check your information not your name. So as long as you change your name on your social security card you shouldn’t have any sort of problem. I’d go ahead and do it now so you don’t have to worry about changing it after you get a mortgage, title, deed all that stuff. Plus that’s 3 months away, you have plenty of time to get it all taken care of.

@irishphoenix:  It’s really not a big deal to change it and would have no impact on mortgage applications.

I agree with PP…I got married in March and changed my name in May…right in the middle of house buying.  No big deal, you just send them copies of your new documents and they pull credit in both your names.  Easy!

I was in the same situation and decided to go ahead and change my social security card. Now I’m slowly changing everything else.

I got married one month ago today, and im the process of changing my name and buying a house. We are in the process of getting pre-approved and we haven’t run into any problems yet, but I will report back if I do. I think changing your name before you start will be beneficial, as it will take a while to get everything switched over.

I would go ahead and change it.  Everything is linked to your social security number anyways, not your name.  And your SS# isn’t changing so there shouldn’t be any issues.

The name change thing wasn’t as big of a pain as I expected.  I just had to take my marriage license to the Social Security offices and then the DMV.  Those are the only legal changes you need to make.  You may want to do the bank first, too.  Everything else (doctors, credit cards, etc) you can do as you go.

@irishphoenix:  My bank told me to wait until after we close to make it easier. There is always one thing or anothe that pops up that you forget to change your name on. Now I have been married four months (still haven’t closed on the dang house yet!) and as time has gone by changing my name seems more and more daunting and I have considered just leaving it. But then I decide I would rather have the new name and shed my old identity (I do not get along with my family so I am more than happy to no longer have that tie to them). Still, everything for the past 32 years has been with my old name… I guess I have mixed feelings somewhat 🙁

I agree about changing it now.  We were actually entering the closing process before the wedding, then signed the paperwork two weeks after the wedding – I didn’t even have my new license yet!.  But I wanted to have my married name on the mortgage.  Either way, just let the bank know you’re in the process of changing it, you’ll still have the same social security number which is how they do credit checks.  Shouldn’t be too difficult.

@irishphoenix:  I just got married 2 months ago and we are closing on a home in two weeks. I haven’t changed my name yet because where I live you have to wait up to 3 months to get the marriage license in order to change your name. I’m just buying the home in my maiden name until I get the marriage license and start the name changing process. If I didnt have to wait so long ot change I would have done it before I got the house to save all the extra paperwork but I really dont have a choice as we wanted the house ASAP. I’m 31 so I also have TONS of stuff I have to change my name on!! Ughh!! I’m not looking forward ot the pricess as all!!

@irishphoenix:  I changed my name right in the middle of the process, and it wasn’t a big deal. I just had to sign paperwork with the correct name bc some forms had one and some had another.
