My parents also gave me both of their last names, but my mom’s name was first, followed by my dad’s name and I usually go by the very last name.

So in your case, if the name was Sally Suzy Lopez Smith, the way I have always written my name is Sally Smith NOT Sally Lopez.

Not sure which way is “right” or if it even matters

Do what makes you happy–I actually really like how you’ve worked it out.  You’ve kept your names but use the ones that you want to.  There is nothing wrong with that at all.

@PenelopeB: I’m sorry I don’t know, but you might want to check with your county clerk’s office or social security office for the right answer.

I don’t think there’s any ‘right’ answer.  Women use all kinds of last name combinations.  Do whatever feels right to you.
