I live in NY and just recently changed my name too. My understanding is that you can send the *original* marriage lisence and SS card by mail to SS for the name change. I was not comfortable doing this. I physically went to my local SS office with marriage certificate, license and SS card. There was no fee. She changed all the information in the system and gave me a letter confirming this. I received the new card in a few weeks.

Since I was already off from work, I went to the DMV and did a name change on my license and had to show my marriage license and letter from SS. They gave me a temp card and the new one arrived a few weeks later. While I was there I also changed my name on my car registration (if you own the car you need to have a copy of the title with your new name, so make sure you complete that step first).

After I received my new license I went to my local banks and changed my name there. After that was a lot of phone calls for student loans, mortgage, credit cards, etc. I had to call each one and then fax new license and marriage license.

Hope me I helped! And sorry if there are typos, as I am on my phone lol

SoonAsYouCan:  I am in Jersey too. First, you have to go get your filed marriage certificate from the town that you got married in. Then, you can go to SS and can do it there OR I guess you can send it in. I went to the actual SS office so I cant really give you advice on mailing it in. You can also go to DMV BEFORE you get it changed w/SS. All the DMV asks for is the marriage certificate.

I’m also in NJ. I got married in The Bahamas so the biggest hassle was waiting for my certificate to be mailed to me. I’m not sure where in the state you are, but I went to Egg Harbor SS office and things went smoothly there. Then, once you get your new SS card you can go to DMV. That’s really it. Some credit card companies ask for a copy of your marriage certificate, but most will change your name with a quick phone call. The bank also needs your marriage certificate with your new SS card and updated license.

SoonAsYouCan:  I mailed in my original certificate when I updated my passport and they sent it all back with no problem.

Send everything certified with a tracking number and delivery confirmation. This way you’ll be more at ease since you’ll be notified of when it gets to the right person and whatnot.

I’m in VA but my husband went to the SS office for me. I had to sign a form giving him authorization (it’s on their website). So if there is someone who can go for you, that could be an option as well

SoonAsYouCan:  I’m old, even though I was just married a year ago, so I forget exactly what I sent! Lol! But I just mailed in whatever they said to on that form As I recall, the county mailed me my certified marriage certificate (what you get after you are married). And in that envelope was the application to change my name with the SS office. That form had instrucations. I want to say I sent in the original certified marriage certificate. I must’ve also sent a copy of my divorce (to prove I am definitely not with that husband anymore) aaaaand… a copy of my DL? I’m sure that was it because they need a photo ID and it’s my only one. They sent it all back and it was FAST. It wasn’t even as long as they said on the form. Maybe a week??

I’m in MN. I don’t have time to go to the SS office, so I mailed the SS application with our original raised-seal marriage certificate. I called before doing this and they didn’t say I needed to submit my original SS card…. Y’all got me nervous about that now. The phone agent at the national SS office said each state has its own requirements about showing proof of identity, so I had to call the local office to confirm I could mail it. I did that even though there was a hand-stamped note on the form showing the address where I could mail it. I also accidentally wrote my maiden name in the wrong spot so I asked if I could use white-out on the form, which she said was okay.

There were 30+ minute wait times for calling the national SS number. The first time I called, I chose the option for someone to call me back and when that finally went through the person at the SS office wouldn’t respond to me. I could hear them typing on their keyboard. The next time I called, I waited 45 minutes.

I would recommend calling your local SS office if you can find the number. When I called the one for MN, they answered right away.

I also called the Minnesota DMV because the tabs happen to be due right now. The guy there said I didn’t need to update the car title with my new name. If I ever sell the car, I just need to remember to sign with my maiden name. He said I could change my name on the title for a fee, but most people choose to leave the name alone.

SoonAsYouCan:  What part of NJ are you in? I have to go on Monday to The social security office and it’s in ocean county(toms river, new jersey) I filled out the social security firm on the government website that is titled “request for new social security card) and I’m bringing it with me with my original marriage license( has to have raised seal, not a photo copy)  youll need the raised seal certified marriage license first Before you can go through SS

These steps were pretty helpful for me.
