Meeeee!  I’m still waiting for the paperwork.  12 weeks, you say?

It’s no big deal, really – just more time with my red and white OHIP card before I have to change over to the new style, haha.

@MrsTimmy:  Hmm….I still don’t even have anything from the minister!

No, but I live in the US.  We actually received our original marriage certificate the day of our wedding.  The pastor just had to sign it and only had to mail a copy of the form to the county in which we were married. I was able to use the original document to have my name changed as soon as we returned from our honeymoon.

In Florida, it took me about 6 weeks to get my marriage certificate after the wedding, but the first time I got married, the county was taking more like 3 months.

We had to wait 3 weeks before we were able to get our marriage certificate.  I thought the county would send us a copy but I waited for a month and still nothing, so down to the County Clerks office I went, only to be told each copy was $14 and that I would have been waiting till the cows came home for a copy to come in the mail because they don’t send them for free/automatically.

I had to order mine here in Michgan, but I had copies and my new license and everything within a month.  I hated having to wait that long, people expect you to change your name the next day, or never.

I almost did. Jamaica takes 8-10 weeks until you receive it. We did a courthouse ceremony to save $6000 in health insurance.

TO – MrsTimmy:  When you marry in Ontario it is a 3 Step Process…

1- Get Marriage License

2- Register the Marriage with the Ontario Government (what happens after the Wedding Ceremony… typically done by the Minister / Officiant)

3- Receive the Official Marriage Certificate from the Province of Ontario

4- Send in copies of paperwork to all required legal offices and organizations to enact a name change (ie Passport – Driver’s License – SIN Card – Health Card – Banking & Credit Cards – Utilities etc)

For the record (as someone else from Ontario might read this post)…

IF you were to marry outside of the Province, you’d process the paperwork as required in the jurisdiction where you marry (ie another Province, US State, another Country)

And once you received the Marriage Certificate from that Authority, you’d be able to do the name change etc here in Ontario (if one marries outside of Ontario you don’t have to go thru Steps 2 and 3 here, ya just go right to # 4)

Hope this helps,

Gosh, I must have been tired when I wrote my previous post (Reply # 10)… it was just before I headed off to bed

Clearly there are 4 Steps, to getting Married & Making a RESULTING Legal Name Change in Ontario.

Marriage = 1 thru 3

Name Change (if applicable) then you do Step 4

If you marry outside of Ontario, then Steps 1, 2 and 3 happen where ever you Marry… and Step 4 ONLY happens if you have a Name Change to report when you return to Ontario

Example,  Mr. TTR and I are marrying in South Carolina.  We’ve applied for our Marriage License from SC by mail.  And will pick it up from the County Courthouse before we marry.  After the Ceremony, we will sign our Registration Form and receive our Marriage Certificate from the State of SC.  Once in hand, and back in Ontario, I send in the copies of my Marriage Certificate along with any other forms & paperwork (and payments if required) to make the change official here to my legal name in Canada / Ontario (ie Passport – Drivers License – SIN Card etc)

I had to wait 4-6 weeks. I was able to get the certificate the 4th week and went straight from city hall to the social security office, then the dmv, and then the bank.   Overall it was fairly easy.
