As the weather gets cold my lips get extremely dry and cracked (even to the point of bleeding at times). Lipstick looks awful because it won’t go on smooth. I have always used globs of vaseline but it just does not cut it anymore. Regular chapstick isn’t enough either.
I am looking for suggestions for a long term solution… so what is your favorite product to ward off chapped lips?

I love Carmex — it got me through several Chicago winters. I use the one in the tube because I don’t like sticking my fingers into pots to apply: http://www.amazon.com/Carmex-Moisturizing-Tube-Original-Balm/dp/B001KYTQ8W
The original has a medicine-y smell though, so I actually prefer the cherry flavor: http://www.amazon.com/Carmex-Lip-Balm-Cherry-ct/dp/B001KYRL4S

Bert’s bees chapstick works well for me. I also like the neosporin brand overnight lip balm. A sugar scrub once a week works well to smooth off any dead skin.

this is going to sound crazy- but cracked nipple creams (for breastfeeding mothers) are perfect for chapped lips. i dont know the brand of the one i have off hand, bought it from a cosmotologist, and it is awesome!! i always find chapsticks dry my lips out even more. this stuff works. its like vaseline, but hopefully it works more for you than reg vaseline does. also, like pp said, a sugar scrub to remove the dried skin periodocally is a good idea. 🙂

Wet your toothbrush and brush the bristles gently across your lips.
Use Carmex or any other medicated lip balm religiously. Burt’s Bees is also great.

Anna113619: Vaseline with Cocoa Butter! Every AM after brushing my teeth and PM after bruahing teeth/going to bed. During the day I use Baby Lips. This works for me during the cold Northeastern weathers.

My lips have become really sensitive lately… doesn’t seem to like most things i put on it. The only lip balm that works for me now is Crazy Rumors. http://crazyrumors.com/ They’re Olive Oil and Shea Butter based with all natural ingredients (many organic & non-gmo). They come in a ton of flavors. My all-time favorite is Grapefruit but i haven’t had a bad one yet.
I usually buy them from iHerb.com because they have them discounted to $2.77 and free shipping at $20 (the site looks a bit shady, but i promise it’s great!) http://www.iherb.com/Crazy-Rumors?gclid=Cj0KEQiAp4yjBRCE_enjmpug944BEiQATCpLvd8FjbbiPBizscNOEZ22R8CWUD081C0CRzb_I1-v5OIaAm818P8HAQ Drugstore.com also sells them.

Oh! Another thing my lips seem to really like is Cheeky Salve by Babytime. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00564V2RU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I keep this one on my nightstand at home because you have to dip your finger in it. It has probiotics so it helps heal.

Carmex! A life saver 🙂 Also to use on your cuticles and sore nostrils when you have a runny nose!

I’ll second Burts Bees (the lifeguard original one that looks ridiculous had the best results but like I said, looks very silly since it’s bright white) and nipple repair creams (just straight Lanolin was the best!). And I’ll add the suggestion Coconut Oil for the exfoliation process to avoid pulling off good skin along with the dead skin. Just rub some CO on your dry lips gently and the flakes should come right off. Then follow that up with whatever moisturizing product you pick (I did Lanolin) and repeat every few days.
Also, vitamins like omegas and hydrating with water more can really help boost your lip health from the insides so the elements aren’t so harsh.

I think MAC lip conditioner (it comes in a tube – like ointment) is great. It’s not sticky and leaves your lips lovely and soft – I get stressed and pick at my lips (it’s an awful compulsion) and this really helps.

My #1 tip is to make sure you’re still drinking lots of water! My water intake drops with the temperature most years and my skin notices.
Mary Kay Satin Lips scrub and balm are excellent.
The Mary Kay Super Emolient Night Cream is awesome for lips at bedtime.
During the day I like to use Hurraw Lip balms. my favorites are mint and root beer. I find them very moisturizing.

I doubley agree with the Mary Kay stuff recommended by a PP. My lips have been awful for YEARS, bleeding every day, even in the summer, constantly cracked, they were such an embarrasment and nothing I tried worked. My sister has a friend who sells Mary Kay, and while I don’t really buy their stuff since I think it’s a little overpriced, she bought me the Satin lip scrub and balm just to try out. It’s AMAZING. After just a week or so my lips looked absolutely brand new. It’s so silky and my lips are so pretty now. It’s the only brand I use on my lips now and I highly recommend it.
