You can absolutely still use charger plates, especially because with a buffet dinner your tables may look very bare otherwise.

The Chargers will definitely give your table a finished look if the actual plates will be placed near the buffet so I say, go for it! We had decided against charges but are now placing guest’s dinner plates in their places for our buffet dinner to make our tables look “full.” I think chargers are slightly more convenient though.

Thought you weren’t supposed to eat off of charger plates…

bibber :  You aren’t, but no one is talking about eating off the chargers here.  Chargers are set on the table so that the guests do not face an empty, inhospitable- looking space. There is no law that they can’t be used for a buffet. Charger plates are removed either after the starter course or the main course, but always before dessert.

bella3 :  They will be fine. If you are concerned that your  guests may not be familiar with chargers, you can even place the dinner plate on top of the charger and the guests can take their plate to the buffet.

I am doing a buffett & setting chargers, along with the dinner plate. I think it makes the tables look more finished.

I had no idea what a charger plate was, but I just Googled it and I just always thought of them as a decoration type thing to make a dinner setting fancier. I don’t think anyone will think you’re supposed to eat off of them. Whether you put the dinner plate on top of the charger plate, or put the dinner plates near the buffet, I think your guests will understand they’re for decoration. And if a couple guests aren’t sure, they’ll realize when everyone else is not using it.

Didn’t realize you were putting a dinner plate on top- disregard my comment.

We are having a buffet dinner for the same reasons you listed (dietary restrictions among guests) and will still be having charger plates at each place setting. I think they really pull the look together so I say go for it! 🙂

I don’t think you need them, but if you like the look of them then just use them!

Off-topic sort of: I have dietary restrictions (vegetarian allergic to milk, cream, most yogurts, edamame, and quinoa). I find buffets to be very hard to eat at. There are usually only a couple items that I can eat. I can’t tell you how many weddings with buffets I’ve been to where I’ve had potatoes, a bun, and salad for dinner. Sometimes beans… 🙁
