We are putting a note on the registry section of our website that we would be honored by any donation to Lambda Legal in lieu of a gift.  They’re a pretty established organization dedicated to same sex rights and legal issues.

The biggest gay rights org is Human Rights Campaign (HRC), but they are kind of on the outs with the gay community because they are very slow to support gay marriage lawsuits going through the court system. That would probably be the most recognizable (their logo is a blue square with a yellow equals sign in the center – you may have seen it on some cars).

There are some newer marriage-focused orgs that have popped up and gotten popular since the whole Prop 8 debacle. The ones that stick out in my mind are Courage Campaign (local to CA) and Freedom to Marry (national). There may be some local orgs in the state you’re marrying in as well (if it’s not CA).

@Entangled: That’s a good org too, although they don’t only focus on marriage, and do pro bono work for LGBTQ court cases. They’ve covered things like schools not allowing gays to bring dates they want to prom, people losing their job for being transgender, etc.

ETA: It kind of depends how you want to support same sex marriage, since Lambda Legal would more directly support court cases and lawsuits, while something like Freedom to Marry might be a little more abstract (they might cover advertising against a similar Prop 8 for example).
