I cant speak to the charting to avoid aspect, but there are definitely girls on here  who do or have done that. I was faced with this same situation in december and realized i couldn’t stay on bcp any longer, I was having a realky hard time.  We ended up deciding not to prevent and pushed up our timeline.  However, I’m pretty sure I  didn’t ovulate the first two cycles off the pill, and my cycles are irregular, so I’d definitely say it is helpful to be off the pill a few months before you start officially trying. And since i realize this could be a very long process I’m glad in hindsight we started a little earlier.

We charted to avoid for 2 cycles (used condoms durring fertile days) & didn’t get KU.  It’s difficult to say if you could get away with it your first few cycles of BCP. Some women are regular right away while others take a couple of months. So you’ll have to be very careful the first couple of months.

I think you’ve made an excellent choice by chosing to chart before actually TTC. You’re going to get to know your body & understand your fertility signs when it does come time to make a baby.

I wouldn’t bother pretend charting. Your temperatures are caused by hormones and you don’t get the hormone shifts that cause the chart patterns while you are on the pill. Have you read the sticky on  TTC? I found it really helpful. You can read it here:

What To Expect – TTC!

I know futurefoxwife does TTA so she might be a good person to talk to about TTA. And I would def recommend joining the charting thread. The ladies on there are super helpful and supportive.

@bestbuddies:  As @Utopia4us:  said, there’s no point in charting until you’ve stopped taking the hormones. As for BCP, I’ve never taken hormonal contraceptives so we just stopped using condoms on non-fertile days once I got the hang of charting.

@bestbuddies:  i dont temp, i just chart other signs to get an idea of my cycle.  We agreed temping was not for us because i tend not to sleep well in the early am.  But try it and see how it goes for you! I do enjoy charting everything else because it helps me know what to expect, and it is greaf to be able to compare months to figure out what my body is doing!

@bestbuddies:  I charted for the last week I was on BCP so I could get used to waking up and taking my temp instead of getting up and getting out of bed first.

Don’t rely on charting for birth control unless you have at least a few natural, charted cycles under your belt!!!  You don’t have ANY idea of whether you are or aren’t fertile when you first start charting.  It takes a few cycles to get the hang of it.  Your CM isn’t very indicative of your fertility when you first come off the pill — there often isn’t very much of it.  You might get an odd temp rise and mistakenly think you have ovulated when you haven’t, etc.

Use condoms, or something else for birth control for the first few months you go off the pill– not FAM.  After a few months, you might be comfortable with using charting to avoid.  It took me many, many, months to be comfortable using charting to avoid — and I’m still really, really careful.  We still use condoms most of the time.

Sorry for the strong, bossy wording.  I just don’t want you to have an oops!

Hiya! Thanks for the recommendation Utopia4us! I am TTA right now and I have been charting for about 4 cycles (6months. Long cycles). We use condoms throughout the whole cycle though just to be sure! Paranoia haha. If you find the Charters if the Hive thread, we’d love to help you out! I’m on FF too ๐Ÿ™‚ if you post your link I’ll friend you!

I’d get off BCP asap, get a folic acid supplement and use protection until you’re ready to be KU. ๐Ÿ™‚ Foxwife’s guide to TTA lol

You might be smarter than me and know this already, but my ob recommended starting prental vitamins or folic acid 3 months prior to when we started ttc, so its just an option.  If you eat cereal they may have already fortified it with folic acid so you can check.  Also, you might want to check to make sure you are up to date with all vaccines – you can check your immunity level in your blood to vacirella (chicken pox) to make sure you have enough immunity – I needed the vaccine, and its best to get that before pregnancy, and also the whooping cough vaccine since infants can’t get that and need people around them to get it.

@bestbuddies:  I am doing the whole TTA for 8 months now and no pregnancies. I have been charting for a year and little did I know when I started I actually did it while in the pill for like 4 months ๐Ÿ™‚ It takes time to learn and understand your hormones. You have made a good decision about charting before TTC. I would recommend that you equip yourself with some OPKs as well to make sure if your ovulation (fertility) signs match the temperature shift you would be expecting. I am still a year or so until TTC, so I hope to be better at reading my fertility signs.
