HeatherWhitney: Define cheap and location in NorCal. Sacramento is cheap, as is the Livermore area. Two hours north of Marin gets pretty cheap too, but you are still looking at venue fees of 3k – 7k for private places.

Try state parks if you need to get lower than 3k — Jack London State Park does a number of weddings in Sonoma and it’s relatively cheap, around 3k… maybe a bit less or more, depending on the package.

  • Wedding: June 2014 - Gold Hill Gardens

HeatherWhitney:  check out Gold Hill Gardens (http://www.goldhillgardens.com) in Newcastle (near Rocklin/Roseville/Lincoln). We got married there over the summer and the owners are the nicest people! The grounds (a 33-acre estate) are stunningly beautiful (just last weekend we were at a family get-together and several family members brought it up), and their prices are really good considering what they offer.

You can see my recap (with non-pro photos) here: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/recap-from-diy-summer-solstice-wedding-pic-heavy/

You can ABSOLUTELY do a wedding with your desired theme there.

HeatherWhitney:  Can you give us a more narrow location and approx guest count?  Max distance from San Francisco?

Wedding venues in Redding, Auburn, Sacramento, Humbolt will be much cheaper than Sonoma/Napa/Marin area.

Oakhill farm in Sonoma is $3000 site rental: http://www.oakhillfarm.net/

If you’re having a small wedding, I’d check with B&B’s and vacation rentals on VRBO.  When I was researching, this listing told me they could have small weddings and were working on having larger ones: http://www.vrbo.com/215767

Falkirk Cultural Center in Marin $1000 – $2000 http://www.falkirkculturalcenter.org/rent-new/

Muir Woods park Community Asociation Clubhouse is $600 – $1500 to rent, and probably has the best views in the bay area.  The website does not show the best part of the site, which is the sweeping panoramic views and outdoor area.  You’d be taking a risk with fog though, and might want to consider Sept or October to avoid fog. http://www.mounttam.org/home.html you can look at some of the pics on Yelp for an idea http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/muir-woods-park-community-association-mill-valley-2#cPbs_O0sWjkY6o0BCRgFdw

  • Wedding: June 2015 - UC Botanic Garden, Berkeley, CA

I’m getting married in Berkeley next June, and we’re having the reception in the Redwood Grove at the UC Botanic Garden. (http://botanicalgarden.berkeley.edu/rentals/facilities.shtml). I looked all over the greater bay area (as far south as Watsonville, many places in the Santa Cruz mountains, and as far north as Santa Rosa), and this was far and away the most gorgeous ceremony site we found. There is a place on site for the reception, but it wasn’t large enough to comfortably fit our guests (~85).

We’re having the reception on the patio of the Alumni House, which has a lovely, wooded feel, slate flooring, and a full kitchen for a caterer. (http://alumni.berkeley.edu/events/alumni-house-rentals).

The one downside is that the parking situation is not ideal, so we plan to shuttle guests from the hotel to ceremony to reception and back to home. Even with the added cost, this was the least expensive of the many places we looked at!
