Sometimes last minute bookings can be cheap because people cancel and they want to keep the reservation for their monthly quotas! HeeHee

Check out the Riviera Maya area in Mexico, but it all depends on the time of year you go.

We booked Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic for 8 nights including flights from Los Angeles for $3200. It’s an all-inclusive resort and we upgraded our room. It would work out cheaper for 6-7 nights, without the upgrade, and with flights closer than LA (obviously depending on where you are coming from). I researched Dominican Republic a lot before we booked and there are definitely some cheaper all-inclusives there, so it’s worth taking a look!

We’re going to Hotel Barcelo in Puerto Vallarta – 5 nights for just over $1000 (for two, all-inclusive).

@katiee0707:  Where do you live?  That will make a big difference.

You are better to book either way before, or just a week a head of time.  Most of the big sites like selloffvacations, tripcentral are conglomerate sites.  So they hedge bets on the cost of the trip.  If you book now, they can charge more, because odds are good between now and August someone else will book that seat if you don’t.  But if you wait until just before it becomes less likely that someone will book your exact seat.

But that said, you can’t be too picky about what specific resort or room you go on if you book last minute.  Though my personal opinion (after going on >20 AI trips) is that the specific resort doesn’t matter, the reviews don’t matter much, and the room doesn’t matter that much.  All 5 star resorts are about the same, and have similar activities, food, level of amenities, etc.  Places like DR, Cuba, Mexico are almost always cheaper, then St. Lucia, Cayman, Grenada.

Don’t stress out about it.  In the end it will be your honeymoon, and that is what will be great about it.

We took a cruise for about $500 pp. Includes all the food. Alcohol is extra.
