I am planning on making flower pomanders for our reception centerpieces and we will have around 40+ tables to put them on. 6 inch styrofoam balls are very pricey! Any ideas of an alternative for them, and how exactly the flowers would stay on?? Any ideas would be very helpful!!

I cant think of anything exactly that could replace them but I got all of mine on Michaels coupons. Plus when you buy something you get a coupon for the next week plus the ones you print. So many coupons and with a little time it saves a lot of money.
Edit: How big do you want your finished pomanders to be?

Try signing up for emails from Michaels. Sometimes they send out whole purchase discount coupons that might help defray the cost. I used a styrofoam ball to put in the flower girl basket for my goddaughter to carry. The flowers stuck in there without a problem and hold well. If you’re concerned, you can poke the hole in with the flower, put a drop of hot glue into the hole and then put the flower back in.

We did hanging pomanders on our pews and used bath poufs from the dollar store! Just hot glued the flowers on.

You don’t actually need a ball to get a round shape. Go to the dollar store and get a block, trim it, or just trim the flower stems to the same length and space them accordingly.

Styrofoam balls are less expensive on Ebay and Amazon.

@ Naturalysam- I want them to be about 8″ or so in diameter finished with all the flowers.
@ Miss Longcoat- I had that thought too, but I would need a pretty big block to cut out a 6 inch ball. But that might be cheaper in the long run.
Thank you all very much for your insights! I am hoping I will run across something. I just don’t understand why the darn things cost so much!

@lutzbride: I saw another bee on here that used crumpled up newspaper wrapped with clear packing tape. She used hot glue to attach the flowers. They looked really good. I didn’t need too many styrofoam balls (12) so I just ended up buying them one at a time with the 40% off coupns from Michaels. Probably spent more on gas than I saved; but it makes me feel better about spending the money.

If you can get away with 5″ styrofoam balls the savings could make the difference. if your flower depth are an inch and a half you would end up with your 8″ pomander.

The cheapest place I found for styrofoam balls was at lacrafts.com, I ordered 5″ balls from there for $12/dozen. They have 6″ balls for $36.00/dozen. Hope this helps!

Would polystyrene work just as well as styrofoam? It seems to be a little cheaper, but not quite sure if it will work the same……
