There are so many reasons why people do it, but I can’t believe that someone would be so blatant about it. I always put sources in my papers for everything I used that wasn’t my own, I wasn’t willing to be expeled over something like that!

What grade level are you teaching? Once I got into high school, I know that if you were caught plagarizing anything, you were expelled, no ifs ands or buts about it

Ugh. I’m a teacher and I’ve definitely been there. It sucks.

@kay01: So let me get this straight- he not only did not cite..but did he use an essay writing site to write the rest of his paper?- Thats the worst thing (I can think of right now anyways) that you can do as a student! Thats buying your paper basically 🙁 Jeez, Im so sorry.

That shouldn’t matter, doesn’t your campus have a zero tolerance policy??? I know mine did, it didn’t matter how small the paper was. We even had to turn our papers in through a website (the name escapes me) that was able to analyze if the paper was plagarized

@kay01: My suggestion would be this: Discuss with the head the course of action and whether you can fail them or not (which you should do). No matter what is said by them when you hand back the paper, attach to it all the places you know that they copied from. Then they know that you know. Or even put it up during class for everyone to see. Obviously you won’t put their name on it, but the class will figure it out. Hell, you could even turn it into an ethical debate!

People plagiarize because 1) The class is too hard/they don’t understand so they get it from elsewhere 2) they procrastinate and run out of time, panic and copy 3) They don’t know how to research and then re-word/reference and so this is the best they can do

I once had a student turn in a paper that plagiarized what I had said! It was unbelievable. Needless to say, that was one heck of an awkward conversation to have.

It’s an ethics course!  That person seriously deserves to fail the course (and if they went to any of the schools I have attended, they would be either put on probation or dismissed from the university!)

@kay01: Wow.

I’m sorry you don’t get support from your administration.  If kids know they can cheat without reprecussions then, well, lots of them will.

You should be permitted to fail the kid no questions asked and s/he should be disciplined.

I say roast the mother bleeper! Open pit fire! Have a luau! As a student who spends hours and hours on homework ( example: 4 hours on 6 Russian sentences to make them as interesting as possible) I can NOT stand students who pull this kind of crap! Every year when all the teachers go over their cheating policy I roll my eyes because no student would do something so stupid, right? *sigh* I’m disapointed that your student had to prove me wrong. Feel free to tell him that.
