Has anyone every just ordered a few plain cakes, maybe like double-stacked or something, from a grocery store and put minimal decorations on yoursel and called it a wedding cake(s)? Because I’m so thinking of doing that.

i wouldnt be against this idea at all. im not a fan of cake in the first place so i hate the though of spending hundreds on a wedding cake. Im thinking of just doing a desert table and having a little cake for him and i to cut.

I’m thinking of just ordering a crap ton of donuts from Krispy Kreme. No decorations or anything…so you’re way ahead of me.

Alot of people do one small decorated cake for the cutting and then sheet trays of cake for guests.
I think jazzing up a cake yourself would be perfectly fine!

@totheislnds: and @Miss Biner: haha you sound like my kinda girls!
I just don’t ever pay attention to the traditional cakes and don’t really care about it.. but I feel there should be some kind of cake. Fiance has wanted to bake our own from the get-go, but we don’t have any supplies so that will get costly. So I am now thinking maybe 3 different shaped cakes (round, square, rectangle) and decorated in a similar but non-matchy fashion should do the trick and cost way less. Maybe a ribbon around one, well wrapped flower buds on another, and fruit the 3rd. I mean even at Kroger’s $125-$150, why bother if I don’t care?

i’m either doing this or baking my own. cake is far from a priority for me, so it’s one area where i’m really trying to save. if you can get a few pretty cake plates and call it a cake buffet, and your guests will think it’s a totally original idea! 🙂

@missbitsnpieces: One thing to watch out for is if your venue has a cake cutting fee. Those can get to be more expensive than the cake itself!
I’ve actually thought about doing that too, though :). I’m not a huge cake person either.
