Is a checkstop when cops set up points on a road where everyone has to stop and they are looking for drunk drivers? (I think we call that something else in the USA).

I’ve only had that happen once, on a holiday weekend (Memorial Day in the US) and it was in Boston on a major street. I think it was 4-5 years ago?

I’ve been driving for 11 years now and I’ve been stopped at two checkstops, both times I was driving and I have never been stopped as a passenger.

TBH, I live in Calgary and I rarely see them. I live in the south and I always hope I will see them between DT and going home but I never do.

@AB Bride:  It’s crazy hey! I was stopped at one right outside an Irish pub in the south, but its was St Pattys day so it makes sense. The other one was in the SE industrial area, I was only over there because a friend I was with left his car there and wanted to grab something. It makes NO sense to have a checkstop in that area.

I’ve been in 3 different ones.  I wasn’t driving for any of them, and these were all a good 4-5 years ago.  I don’t think they have them in Los Angeles anymore, or at least not where I live.

Zero? Not sure I’ve ever even seen one.

@crayfish:  I live in the U.S. and always called them “police checkpoints.”

ETA – I’ve been in 3-5 (can’t remember exactly), but only 1 as a driver.

I’ve only seen them in the city, Chicago and Milwaukee specifically and usually on Memorial Day, Fourth of July or New Years weekends

Haha awesome terminology clarification :-). Canada has such a British/US hybrid when it comes to terminology and slang!

Florida law requires that checkstops be noticed (which means anybody can find out when and where they are going to be and broadcast it) so they aren’t used very frequently in my area.  We don’t worry about it because we live in the downtown area where all of the bars are so we can easily stumble home after happy hour or order a cab when the bars close.

I live in Orange County, CA… so there are checkpoints at every major holiday and some weekends just for fun. I’ve been through prob 5-6 since I’ve lived here.
