We were in Chicago last month.  We stayed at the Whitehall Hotel and it was nice and right off Michigan Avenue!  We found it on hotels.com and it was about $150 per night.

You really don’t need to rent a car in Chicago.  Its really expensive to park (at the hotel or anywhere in the city) and Chicago has a great public transportation system.

Check kayak.com for really good hotel deals.  Also look at travelzoo.com.

Loop hotels tend to be expensive – the Hyatt is gorgeous, and you can sometimes get rooms for about $110 a night if you get a special, but you probably won’t get anything near that at Peak season. If you aren’t opposed to public transportation, you might want to look at the hotels in Lincoln Park/Lakeview. There are a lot of charming places with character right by public transportation. I wouldn’t call our system great – you sometimes have to wait 10 minutes or so for a train, and I’ve waited 15 or 20 before during construction times – but it is fairly cheap. Cabs are also plentiful around here, and there are buses that go right from the swanky Lake Shore Places (okay, I live in one this year! 4 of us split rent, and it’s cheaper than my old apt by far) to the Loop.

Feel free to ask for any recommendations. The Loop is fun, but most people underestimate the “other” parts of the city that stay awake for much longer!

Plus, Chicago is a very “walking” city. You would best be served with some great walking shoes.

For hotels, you may want to try to priceline. There are some great hotels which are more expensive (Allegro, W), but you can also look at ones near McCormick Center which are a little but out of the loop area, but still close enough (cab or bus) and a little cheaper, provided there’s not a huge convention in town.

Hi! You will absolutely love Chicago before Christmas! I would definitely stay somewhere near the magnificent mile. Whenever I want to stay in this area I use Hotwire.com, you can’t pick the hotel you are staying at, but I’ve found that if I pick a 4 star and above hotel, I always get a beautiful hotel for extremly cheap. Last year right after Christmas my fiance and I used this and ended up getting a room at the historic Drake hotel for $70.00 a night. To stay in the shopping district just make sure you pick a hotel in the Magnificant Mile area. Unfortunately, I really don’t know how you will get around the valet costs though. On the flip side several hotels that I really like downtown are the Palmer House Hilton on Michagan Ave (close to Museums), The Drake (close to Water Tower Place), and the James Hotel. You can definitely walk all over Chicago just make sure you dress warm as it will probably be snowing in December. Good Luck! : )

Two non-major-chain hotels you might really love are Hotel 71 and the Conrad, both of which do sometimes offer rooms in your price range and are located in the perfect location for walking around (also very safe area). As for parking…it’s just going to be expensive.
