Not sure if you are open to suburban venues but I got married at the Brookfield Zoo and it is a GORGEOUS outside venue. Our reception was in a pavilion which is basically a giant gazebo so that had a good balance of the indoor/outdoor vibe. On the same unique note the Lincoln Park zoo does beautiful weddings but they are more expensive. you can also get married outdoors at the Shedd aquarium and have your reception indoors.

But I swear I’m not obsessed with only animal related venues!! Other great ones include Salvage One and Greenhouse Loft which has an amazing outdoor space and is one of the only green/sustainable venues in the city. Hope this helps start the gears turning as you sift through the MANY venues in Chicago!

misia12003:  if you’ve got the $$$, Adler Planetarium and the Art Institute both have breathtaking terraces on which to get married. Otherwise, Promontory Point park (in Hyde Park) offers a great lake backdrop for an outdoor ceremony, and the skyline is right there for photos afterward.

misia12003:  The reception at Promontory Park is held inside a very lovely little building with hardwood floors and (IIRC) beams arching overhead — it’s adorable. At Adler, it’s inside but in a room of walled glass, overlooking the lake. Art Institute — well, if you’ve got the cash to rent the Terzo Piano and the adjoining room (I think they only rent together), you can certainly have the reception outdoors as well, OR you can rent the courtyard space, which is lovely.

misia12003:  One more thought — again, it’s spendy, but the Chicago Botanic Garden (http://www.chicagobotanic.org/) is gorgeous and the reception, as well as the ceremony, are outdoors (though tented against rain).

It’s a little different than the ones others are suggesting, but River Roast and Rivers Restaurant both have gorgeous terraces on the Chicago River. You get the Chicago city vibe and a nice indoor/outdoor space.

I’ve also heard great things about Promontory Point or Humboldt Park Boathouse for wedding ceremonies.
