I am recently engaged and searching for a venue for a 2013 Saturday evening wedding for around 200-220 people in downtown Chicago. Has anyone else found an affordable venue/caterer that you could recommend? What about negotiation techniques with any venues/hotels. Thanks!

I would recommend that you book early. Decide what your top three priorties are when booking the venue. Is it food? location? decor? etc…

Book now. Really. My venue (Salvage One) is already booked through December 2013. I dont know what your budget is, but if you are looking downtown, you are most likely going to spend at least 25K, more because of the amount of people in your party.
The most affordable venues we saw downtown was Stan Mansion and, while it’s not necessarily downtown, the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame was super reasonable. If you can stand to be a bit out of the center of the city, look at the Irish Heritage Museum.
As for caterers, we are working with Goose Island. They were the most reasonable and gave a great presentation. Most venues downtown will require you to work within their list or use their caterer.

@ohmybears48: Are you saying that every Saturday between now and December 1013 has already been booked out at salvage one? That’s really unfortunate … I was planning on going down and looking at that place next weekend for an April 2013 wedding.
@hpbride: The only venue I’ve seen (in person) so far is the Murphy Auditorium on East Erie Street. It’s a really neat venue, and is relatively unknown – so there is a good chance your date (whatever it is) has not been booked yet. Also, I believe it holds 250 people, although I can’t remember for sure.

@Irish Terrier: That is what we were told. They may have a couple days here and there, but when we booked our day, they told us the next available day before us was a Friday in July and the day after us was in November of 2013. That was in December.

@hpbride: Congrats on your engagement! The cheapest place I looked at for receptions was Pazzo 311. http://www.pazzos311.com/
