Hey ladybuglove,

I’m actually from the troupe that did Mrs. Toucan’s wedding.  I want to give you a heads up that all troupes are different.  Mrs. Toucan never dictated what we did or how long we would perform except for where we were going to perform and at what time.  Before you book a lion dance troupe, you can often times find their performances on YouTube, their troupe’s website, or learn about them through others who have seen them perform.

Booking a lion dance troupe for a wedding is completely different from booking musicians or a DJ.  You can tell them exactly what you want them to play and for how long. I can’t speak for all troupes, but when you book a lion dance troupe, you just tell tell them where and what time.  Troupes usually have a set routine they do already so it could be 10 min, 15min, or 20 min, etc.  Make sure to ask them how long they perform for and even ask if you could see some of their performances if you can’t find it online or elsewhere.

Additionally, the cost of booking a lion dance troupe is different everywhere.  In Boston, we’re actually one of the more expensive ones around, but we are solely just a lion dance troupe who practices every week. Many troupes are actually martial arts groups with lion dance on the side. I believe New York and California troupes are more expensive than Boston troupe.  So make sure you do your research and not just settle for one lion dance troupe. 🙂

 Good luck,

I’m located in the Bay Area (N. Cali) and I had a client who hired a team of lion dancers for around $400 for 15-20 mins.  They were willing to perform longer, but she didn’t want it too long so she told them to shorten it.  If you’re in the SF Area, you can check out Leung’s White Crane.

Ooh how fun! I love lion dancers at a wedding. It just brings so much flare, fun and tradition all in one package.
