If you know your estimated guestlist size, you can automatically rule out venues that are too big or too small for that size.

The moment we became engaged we already knew we wanted a smaller wedding. We contacted the reception venue (upscale restaurant with a private room) and based our guest list off their maximum room allowance (50 guests). After that – we split the guest list 50/50. Done.

We did a quick draft of friends & family that we’d love to have (our “A List”), and went from there. We counted about 245 guests, with about 20-30 of them from out of country that we think wouldn’t make it..and to keep costs wedding costs down, we looked for venues that held ~200 people.

Guest list first then venues for us, it helps with the search process and it was important to us to not cut out a certain number of guests just based on space

Rough guest list first and then a venue. First we were going with no kids and then when we picked our venue that was very kid friendly we increased our guest list to include children

We decided we wanted a small outdoor wedding with family and close friends, but did not make a list before picking the venue. His family is larger than mine, so there was a minute there where I was thinking more like 30-40 and his # was higher. If everyone had been able to attend, we may have been a little tight, but everything worked out really well with around 60 people. The garden seated 60 and the reception hall fit up to 75.

Honestly, your BUDGET should be the way you decide on both of these things. If you find a venue you love that filts 250 people buts it’s over budget, then it won’t work regardless. You may also have to choose between your dream venue and a larger wedding.

Guest list since this is such a critical component of the budget. because we wanted a small wedding (50)most venues worked. Although some were actually too big.
