@bridemella: I went to a wedding where my name card had a little design for what I wanted to eat… a little fork for steak.  Fi had a little shell for fish, and then when we took our name cards to our assigned table, we sat wherever we wanted.

We did little icons in the corner of our placecards (a chicken, a cow, and a mushroom) for the three entrees.  I based them off of these: http://www.stylemepretty.com/2009/06/10/diy-project-custom-place-cards/  You could also use different color ribbons or different colors of ink to represent the different entrees.

I assigned tables, based on who knows who.  Yes, you don’t want it to be brides side/grooms side, but you also don’t want people stuck at a table with noone to talk to.  So our tables did end up being based on family, and our friend tables were more mixed.  Each person could pick their own seat at the assigned tables, though.
