The holiday season is baking season for me. I make snickerdoodles and sugar cookies, cupcakes and fruitcakes, even a bundt or two – so when my closest friend, Carly, called me Christmas Eve-Eve to ask if I wanted to go out to the barn the following day I committed but told her I had to go to the grocery store in the morning to get baking supplies. It really didn’t occur to me that the next day was Christmas Eve, that the grocery store was going to be packed, or that it was supposed to snow all day.
When I woke up (late) and checked my recipes to make my grocery list, I realized I wasn’t going to make it to the barn on time then I checked outside and it was snowing. Not a chance. I have been a “Fair Weather” rider for the last five or so years, since I stopped competing. I really had no interest in freezing my bum off at the barn so I texted my friend and told her I wasn’t going to make it and we should ride tomorrow. No, she said, she had to work tomorrow. I still, at this point, hadn’t realized it was Christmas Eve. Eventually my dad and I headed to the grocery store and he got a call from Fiance with a legal question (FI is a police officer and I was told he was going to be in court all morning so this wasn’t really out of the usual). A few moments later I get another, kind of snarky, text from my friend telling me I HAD to come out to the barn because she was already out there. Shortly after, my dad got a phone call. He hung up the phone whispered “Shit, we’re late” and tried to hurry me through the rest of the groceries.
Okay, looking back I must have either been asleep or dim that whole morning because now it seems obvious.
Dad and I threw the groceries in the trunk and he started driving towards the barn and I asked him if he read the text from Carly over my shoulder. Very unlike my dad. He said yes and figured I could use a little fresh air before the bake-a-thon that was about to go down in my kitchen. A little miffed and wondering what I was going to do about my Nike Airs at the barn (not a good combo), we got to the barn where the owner and head trainer were waiting in the office (completely normal) and we hung out and started chit chatting. I didn’t see Carly anywhere. Growing increasingly more annoyed, I asked the guys if they had seen her. They each said “No” and I said my goodbyes and started to head towards the car dragging my dad behind me. Then Carly walked up from who-knows-where and grabbed my hand, dragging me and my dad back in to the barn. All of a sudden, it seemed, my friends (most of which have never and would never step in a barn unless totally necessary), FI’s family, and pretty much everyone important in my world was in the barn. The only thing I could mutter, because at this point I knew it wasn’t a normal day at the barn, was “Okay guys, I was born at night but not last night.” FI’s best friend, Brian, handed me a cell phone with FI’s voice coming out of it and I was told to “NOT TURN AROUND.” Which I did, of course. Fiance was at the end of the aisle in full Marine dress blues looking stoic as ever with snow falling in a blanket behind him. It looked like a movie scene.
I couldn’t tell you a single thing that recording said to me. Everyone (but me?) was crying. I was shaking uncontrollably and laughing. It was all I could do. At the end of the recording, FI’s voice told me to turn around and I did. Carly SHOVED me because apparently it was supposed to be a given that I was to walk down the length of the aisle to him? My nervous reaction was to respond with “Damn, you guys are going to make me walk the plank?” No one else found that funny. I was still laughing when I got to Fiance, on bended knee, holding a ring box.
I said yes and barely had time to say “Bye” to everyone before they all dashed to warm cars and back home to spend their Christmas Eve with their families, but it was nice of them to take the time out of their day to bear witness to my engagement… especially since I was 2 hours late when all was said and done.
I had picked out the ring months earlier and was actually kind of pissed I hadn’t been given it yet before this whole ordeal. When I picked it out, I also made note of some things on it I would like changed but when I got it, nothing had been changed. Oh well! Not really. I found an inclusion in the “flawless stone” so we sent it back to the etsy seller (mastergoldcraft) and he graciously stated his fault and fixed everything we asked him to. I just got the edited ring back today and it is FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC! Here is the first version of the ring:Diamonds on the shoulders, large inclusion, milgrain everywhere
And here is the finished product:
No diamonds on shoulders, flawless stone, no milgrain
Sorry for the enormous pictures!
The first was 2.5 carats, the second is around 3 carat – pear Morganite with diamond halo in rose gold.
ETA: If you want a custom gemstone ring or want any piece of jewelry “edited” I really, truly recommend mastergoldcraft on Etsy. Sometimes it takes him a while to return your email but he DOES get around to it. He’s just very busy 🙂
