@futurejhart:  people will have lots of questions regardless of when he proposes. not sure what you can really do about it, honestly.

@futurejhart:  As soon as you tell people they will start asking detailed questions about your date, dress, venue, colors…. it’s kind of insane. But just keep repeating “We haven’t decided anything yet and are just enjoying being engaged!” If anything, everyone being around will help that message get spread faster.

I don’t see how this would ruin it at all. I had a very private proposal and it was wonderful but my family didn’t poke or pry which was what I thought I wanted – it is nice to have them show so much interest and excitement about it.

If he does steal you away to propose and you come back and are not comfortable with all of it you can find a way to change the subject (start a conversation with someone else) or you can flat out tell them you just want to enjoy Christmas and will talk about it later.

Ya no matter how one gets Engaged… the minute that the word gets out it will be ENDLESS Questions from everyone you meet.

If you are a private person… then you probably need to conveyy to your Boyfriend or Best Friend that you would prefer a Private Intimate Proposal than one that is in front of a lot of people or over the top.  And hopefully he’ll respect your wishes.

As for the Question in your UPDATE:

I guess I just imagined a lot of time for it to sink in just us? How soon after your engagement did you start talking details with your SO?

Mr TTR & I are Encores and Older…

He proposed on vacation in the Destination we planned to Elope to (well I really didn’t know that until he proposed when he said the words… NOT … Will You Marry Me… BUT… “You Should Look into us Marrying the next time we are here”… which I knew was going to be December)

We were out walking along the Beach… when it all happened.  It was April.  We continued our walk, and he shared with me his “vision” for the Wedding.  He had done a lot of thinking on his own about the Wedding and had some very distinct ideas … such as the Location (Myrtle Beach) – the timing (Christmas) – the setting (on the Beach) etc

Plus we only had about 8 months from The Proposal to the Elopement… so ya, we had to get things moving pretty quickly.

If you are looking at an Engagement of about a year or less… or around a Holiday etc.. then ya you have to get going on things pretty quickly.

Just remember that the key things you need to work out / nail down first EVEN BEFORE you mail out any Save-The-Date Cards are:

  • Date
  • Budget
  • Final Guest List
  • Venue
  • And that Your Budget and Venue have to be able to accomodate your Guest List

Some of these are HUGE in that they require a lot of work to get done.  Budget & Guest List can be a nightmare for many couples.

Hope this helps,

@futurejhart:  We got engaged on Christmas day. We spent the next two days with family but kept it to ourselves and announced it on NYE and New Year’s day. That way we had a week to enjoy it and I’m glad we did it that way. We also went shopping for a ring that week and had something to show everyone when we did announce it. I wouldn’t change the way we did it.
