This sounds pretty standard.  Generally you pay for the most expensive item and get the lesser of the items at the discount or for free.

I shop BBW frequently, you do pay for the more expensive products and get the others free.

Sign up for the BBW emails and you can stack coupons. I usually have at least a $10 off or $20% off coupon every month and often have coupons for one free product once you spend $10. So you could do the buy 3 get 3 deal and then use your 20% off coupon and your free product coupon all on one trip. BBW is great about this.

Also, wait for sales. For example, yesterday was $2.50 hand soaps, Friday was $3 body wash, today was $12.50 candles. These are one day only sales they run.

Doesnt matter how she scans them, the system takes care of the math anyways.  Free ones are usually the lesser of the bunch.

I worked at BBW for 4 years, that’s policy you didn’t get ripped off. Maybe someone was confused? But you always have to pay for the more expensive ones.
If you’re buying a TON you can break up the transactions to get a couple more expensive ones for free if they’re equal.
