I’ve been to many places in the Caribbean and have absolutely loved it. There’s actually quite a bit to do besides laying on the beach. You can hike, do water sports, visit the towns (depending on where you go)

One place I love that incorporates both of what you’re looking for is San Diego/Coronado Island. I’m not sure if you’ve ever been, but I actually used to live down there before moving north to L.A. San Diego is a beautiful, nice, clean and Coronado is just a short drive away. There’s also quite a few towns north, La Jolla for example, that are more quaint and “beachy” if you will. However, it depends what time in July you are going. For example I would avoid Coronado Island like the PLAGUE during 4th of july time. It is peak season and uncomfortably crowded. However, towards the end of July, it clears out substantially.

But then again, I’ve never been to Australia, and that would probably be my vote.

Delphine12:  I absolutely love San Francisco.  The public transit is amazing and there are plenty of bus companies that offer day trips to the wine country for tastings at local wineries.  I would be happy there for at least a week.

Hawaii is actually a great destination that combines the beach and adventure (biking at Diamond Head is the first to come to mind after surf lessons.

But if you can afford to go to Australia GO!  My in-laws went a few years ago and loved it.  In a few years life and kids will get in the way of a 20+ hour flight to Sydney so I would go now.  But bear in mind that Sydney experiences winter weather in July (i.e. temps in 50s), so it may not be a beach friendly honeymoon.

I see Port Douglas is further North so you’ll definitely get 60s-70s there, even in July.

Delphine12:  I love cities, as does my Fiance.. but for our honeymoon we wanted the option to lay around and do nothing, swim, dive, and tan.

We ended up settling on Dubai and the Maldives. We do Dubai first and then spend the rest of our time relaxing in the Maldives. Win-win!

Have you thought about Puerto Rico? It has the big city feel, but also one of the top beaches (on Culebra… you just have to take a ferry to get to it) in the world. We went two years ago and it was absolutely fantastic – we went ziplining, snorkeled and did the bio bay tour (this bay has little bioluminescent creatures that light up when you are kayaking through them – apparently it’s one of two places in the world that has it). Good luck deciding!

Actually next Saturday my Fiance leave for our honeymoon- 4 days in NYC and then a week long Caribbean cruise!!! So that perfectly incorporates city/adventuresand beach time in our opinion! 🙂
