It sounds like your sister just doesn’t want to wear a long dress (provided she’s a bm). Long dresses certainly aren’t out.

I think you’re overthinking this. Your dresses are going to go great. Most things go with a ballgown. I suggest looking through real wedding photos of brides with their bms to get a better idea of what style you want. Try wedding websites, Google Images, etc.

Your bridesmaids certainly can wear a long dress if that’s what you want. They can also wear a dressy short dress.

For an evening wedding with you in a ballgown, you would just want to avoid bridesmaid dresses that are too casual .

@DWest2b: That dress in black would look great.

Here’s a big dress with short black maids dresses

All of my dresses are coming from Alfred Sung.  I just picked out the color, material and length and they get to pick out the style that works best for them.  Check them out at dessy.com

I think for the type of wedding you’re having, a long bridesmaid’s dress is the best way to go.  True, they aren’t as common right now, but they are classic and can never go out of style.  Short dresses are more of a fad and tend to come and go.  Nothing wrong with them at all, but I tend to associate them with more casual and/or summery occasions.  Since your wedding is neither casual nor during the summer, I would definitely do long dresses.  An A-line dress for them would go well with just about any style of wedding dress, and also works well on just about any body type.  If you’ve found the dress that YOU want, go with it, and choose bridesmaid’s dresses accordingly, not the other way around!!!
