I have a wedding gown listed in the classified. I got this email from a bee: tracyb974 has sent you a message:
RE: Beautiful dress
Let me know if the dress is still available for sale…reply to (briantracey974 AT yahoo.co.uk) for quick sale.
Then I sent a paypal invoice for the dress.
Then she sent me this SCAM!!!!
Sorry for the late in update. I just want you know that i have made the payments out to you and PayPal emailed me confirming this…So please check your PayPal email address at (….) for the PayPal payment confirmation mail. PayPal said that they would be holding the money i sent because of the excess payments that i made which was the money for pick up of the item, I will need you to proceed and Wire the excess which is $300 to my pick up agent to enable them make a booking for the picked up of the item.Remember that you are going to wire the agent fee to them via western union Money transfer as that is there method of payment.
So please do send the $300 through western union money transfer and use the remaining change of $50 as western union charges. You can easily Walk to the local post office or any Western union outlet around you. After you have sent the money please get back to me asap with the western union details, the MTCN number which you will be given by WESTERN UNION after you have sent the money as well as the sender’s name and address so i can forward it back to PayPal for your money to be put through or you can email it to PayPal directly, that is alright as well.
Here is my pick up agent’s info that you will need to send the money to through western union money transfer:
201 plot bs
I will need the address where the dress will be picked up,as my pick up agent will contact you to book a pick up time and date after they have received payment but they will have to book a time that is convenient for you.I will be glad you send the money out to the agent information above as you promised to do this afternoon and get back to me with the western union details towards fast accreditation of your account with ($950.00) today.

Do people really fall for this stuff? How ridiculous. If someone is SO gullible and foolish as to trust a random internet stranger and wire money to someone they don’t know, it’s almost hard to feel bad for them…

I voted yes, but only b/c I had a spam response to something I posted. I didn’t fall for it.

Anywhere that anyone is selling anything, there will be someone attempting to scam them.
If any SELLER is naive enough to send money to a BUYER, they really need to educate themselves about the ways of the worlld.

I got the EXACT SAME EMAIL 3 days ago!!!!! Although, I knew something was fishy when I went to search their “username” (tracyb974), and it did not exist. Very scary!! Be careful, Ladies!!

I got the same email!! Darn it I was so excited to sell my dress, but after I got the email to ask to send money via Western Union to a “pick up agent”, then I felt uncomfortable.
Glad I came onto the forum and found this posting!!

I had a scam email about a dress I had for sale. I had already sold it and even took the dress off the classifieds but somehow they must have seen my ad somewhere. When I replied that the dress was no longer for sale they sent me an email saying something like “If you have any more dresses for sale please contact me for purchase.” Ummm how many dresses do you need for your wedding and do you think I just have tons of dresses laying around at my disposal to sell?
I deleted the email. It was pretty amusing I wish I had saved it now to post.

I was just the victim of the same scam!!!!!! someone emailed me that they wanted to buy my dress, sent through a “payPal” although not through paypal email. I was suspicious of it from the start because they said they had their “own shipping company amd would come to pick the dress up”. Um, no thank you. When I called Paypal to report this, they confirmed that they never work with outside vendors. I wrote the girl back and asked her to quit contacting me – and seconds later received another fake email saying “we know that we (paypal) told you that this was suspicious but we assure its not and to proceed with payment.” are you kidding??!!

I would always just try to deal locally and with cash. I have read way too many nightmare stories about people being out their item to be sold AND cash after dealing with someone not locally.

I’m going through this righ now, trying to sell a bridesmaid dress that was never ever used, I’ve gotten nothing but scam messages. Really? It’s frustrating…I can tell right away as well when they are, so when I message back so i don’t hear back lol.

Markinu: Hang in there! Our new Classifieds system is coming soon, and it should make it harder for scammers and spammers to post and reply to posts.
