Unfortunately, sometimes everyone can’t make weddings for their own reasons. I don’t think it’s right to be bullied into having it at a location that you will resent, that’s not a happy start!

Is it possible for your Fiance to talk to his grandfather directly?

Your Future Mother-In-Law needs to be a little bit more understanding. Good luck!

I second your Fiance talking to his grandfather directly. His mom might just be feeling really protective of her father as he gets older. Since he is the person of concern I think it would be best to find out from him what would make him uncomfortable. You don’t want to be bullied into a location, but if having his grandfather there is that important you don’t want to alienate him either. Is it possible your Future Mother-In-Law does not want to travel and is using the grandfather as an excuse?

Is it possible for FI’s grandfather to take a train? He can get up and move around as much as he wants.

I suggest hooking Grandpa up with a computer and skyping the ceremony.

Our families are from two different states as well, but we really want to have the wedding here where we now live. We knew some people would not be able to travel, two of them being my grandmothers, so we decided to have a local celebration after the wedding. That way everyone got to celebrate with us, but we still get to have the wedding we want in the location that means something to us. Maybe that is a possibility for you as well?

@SparkleInMyEyes:  I’m wondering if the problem is actually your Future Mother-In-Law and not Grandpa.  SHE seems very unwilling to travel and I wonder if she’s just using Grandpa as an excuse.

I’d definitely ask Grandpa directly if this is how he feels.

ETA:  Sorry about that.  I just saw that @FloretteLiz:  beat me to the punch on that one.  🙂
