@siegeli:  Don’t worry to much about negative feedback some bee’s need to try and put themselves in your shoes how would they feel about a close friend ignoring her save the date so much that she didn’t even realise she booked a holiday for it after.

I am seeing this from the point that a year after your wedding you will look at your pictures and feel like there is someone missing that would upset me therefore I sympathise

When your parents get to be older (my Dad is 76, and I’m really hoping he makes it to 80), family occasions like that trump non-family weddings. Maybe they could have scheduled around your wedding, but I’m sorry, you really shouldn’t expect for another family to schedule a reunion around your wedding date.

Regardless, you are correct-your friend was flaky about this. Is it worth losing a friendship over, with someone whom you know to have those traits? Probably not. It stinks that she won’t be there, but I don’t see this being worth losing a friendship over.

Not only would I miss the wedding for a family cruise celebrating an 80th birthday, but I would be hurt that my long time friend was upset about it. 80 is a huge milestone, I know because my favorite aunt just turned 80 last month, and because of a party for her, several family members will not make it to my wedding next month. But I am fine with it.

She knew the date of your wedding, however; cruise pricing varies week to week based on availability. Also especially if it is sailing out of South Florida the itineraries change from week to week. If a 7 night cruise one week the ship will sail western Caribbean, the next it will sail Western. Not only that, the date of your wedding is when the prices are the lowest in the month due to schools being back in session and spring break being over. Availability for rooms especially if there is a group of them going could have a lot to do with that week being chosen as well.

Don’t take it personally, she didn’t choose the date, the family did.
