It all depends on the cluster ring.  My engagement ring belonged to my Great Grandmother and it was from the late Edwardian/Early Art Deco period.  We’re talking almost 100 years old and in near mint condition!  The ring has exsquisite delicate filigree work with milgrain that wasn’t very common, but they couldn’t afford a large diamond for the center so they had seven tiny diamonds fill the area.  I still get a TON of complements on it even though it isn’t traditional.  And it never gets knocked or caught on things like a traditional setting.  The wedding band was cusom fitted by Simply Unique jewelers in Yorktown, VA.

@ OP -I don’t mind cluster rings but I’m not a fan of the one you posted.

Funny thing is we could’ve afforded a single stone but I chose an invisible setting princess cut halo.  The princess cut is made of 4 smaller princess cut diamonds but they’re the standard quaility for a chain jewelry store pre-select ring (Jared’s).  The reason I looked for it was because I wanted to have something to upgrade to someday.  I really wanted a forever ring/bridal set and now I can at least upgrade the center diamond on our 10th anniversary.  I’m not a huge fan of anniversary bands or wearing a 3rd band simply because I have small hands and short fingers.

So if you want a cluster ring, go for it.  I don’t think they get dull quickly because they have lower quaility.  I think it’s because people don’t clean them as much as they should and honestly because of all of the different surfaces and open spacing, I think this ring requires more maintinance.  At least a good scrub with a soft toothbrush and a little dish soap minus the soaking.

@ bsbee your ring is similar to mine.  It’s not considered a cluster because it’s an invisible setting that makes up a quad design.

I know this thread is kinda old, but reading through some of the replies kind of irked me. Those who think that everyone who has a cluster is trying to fool people into thinking they have a bigger diamond… if that’s what you think and you don’t agree with it, then you aren’t really looking at a cluster ring for its own beauty, and are completely pre-judging.

And while I’m sure some people go for the bigger bang for your buck, a lot of people, including myself, chose their cluster because they fell in love with it for what it was. I didn’t get a cluster because it was cheaper for the carat weight. Au contraire, my .44 tcw was $4200! I could have gotten a pretty nice solitaire, or a much higher tcw for that type of money, but I wanted my cluster ring. I hate to think that people look at my ring and think it must be cheap, but at the end of the day, I love it and get so many compliments that I just don’t care.

My beautiful Tiffany cluster ring that I would never trade!

Flippin heck nothing is safe is it. How do people have the time to get moral over what sort of sparkle someone elses ring has.

I don’t like all clusters but the ones that are like flowers or snowflakes are my taste. A single diamond cut that way wouldn’t look as good, small diamonds sparkle differently, like glitter. I like small diamonds actually. i like the way clusters glitter, maybe some people prefer that type of sparkle to a bigger stone? Maybe some people don’t want a large single stone just like some people want a yellow stone or no stone. Judging other people for their jewelry taste is a bit of a waste of time.

Cluster rings really aren’t that different than halo rings – and we all see how popular halo rings are right now. I think some clusters do look tacky, but that can happen with any ring style. A well done cluster can be very beautiful, in my opinion.
