Cocktail = women in short dresses, ie, “cocktail” dresses. men in dark suits. 


Black-tie =women in formal, floor length gowns. Men in dark tuxedos. Black tie events must begin after 6pm.

I think it depends on your crowd and what they’re used to. I would probably wear the same type of dress to either party. I don’t own a gown and wouldn’t buy one unless I’m going to the oscars or something.

Black tie isn’t just a dress code, it’s a type of event. Floor length gowns, men in full tuxedos for black tie. Extremely formal. I wouldn’t consider a birthday party EVER black tie unless it was like, Beyonce’s birthday party. 

Cocktail – cocktail dresses, men in dress slacks and a button up, possibly in suits but not typically (at least IMO)
