Coffee drinkers, did you like coffee from the get go or acquire a taste for it?

It took some getting used to, but I started very young – my first cup of coffee was when I was 10, and I started drinking it regularly around 12-13. I’ve only recently began drinking it almost black – that’s a definite acquired taste and you also want to be sure you’re drinking quality coffee!

I loved it the first time I tried it… when I was 12. It was coffee with irish Cream creamer in it. YUM!

When I first started drinking it I had to load it up with sugar and cream in order to even be able to stand it. I gradually started tapering off the sugar and cream, and now I drink straight black coffee, and I can’t stand sugary coffee drinks now. It definitely takes time getting used to but it does happen!

My mom always drank it when I was a kid. It came natural to me.

I have liked plain black unsweetened coffee for about as long as I can remember.  Even as a kid I would sneak sips of my grandpa’s coffee while he read the morning paper.

Acquired taste for me. I started with things like frappucinos, lattes, etc. Anything to mask the taste of the coffee, haha! And although I weened myself off the sugary stuff, I still prefer flavored coffee to regular brews. Things like skinny vanilla lattes, etc.

My dad let me try cappuccino when I was 10. Then it turned into ordering me my own cup of cappuccino. And then it turned into ordering coffee whenever my mom would go to Dunkin Donuts. So. . . since I’m 10 I’ve been drinking it pretty regularly. I need at least one cup a day to get me through.

My first cup of coffee was black at the age of 19.  I was in the military and falling asleep during school, so I was ordered to stand up and drink coffee (I had just got out of basic, had to wake up at 4 and went to school from 6 to 2 & did 1 hour of PT immediately after).

I still drink it black to this day.  Ha!

Definitely an acquired taste!

If I don’t like something, I tend to eat/drink it until I do… I hate being that guest who doesn’t eat something when I’m at someone’s house! Now there’s hardly anything I won’t eat or drink 🙂

@pokie45:  I’ll start this by saying that I’m a coffee addict.  Like drink an entire pot of coffee in one sitting kind of addict.  (And yes, I know this is unhealthy!)

That being said, I don’t drink black coffee.  It’s gross.  I don’t think I’ll ever like black coffee.  I’m a cream and sweetener kind of girl.  I like flavored creamers and flavored coffees, but I also like a dark roasted “plain” coffee with “plain” cream and sweetener.

I didn’t start drinking coffee regularly until my later college years (I think junior and senior year).  I have fond memories of meeting up with friends in the student center for breakfast (always a toasted wheat bagel with apple jelly) and coffee.  I never had to acquire a taste for coffee, though.  It was kind of weird … I just started playing around with amounts and types of creamer and sweetener until I found the right balance.

I agree with jocember that you do need to make sure you’re drinking quality coffee … You can definitely taste the difference!

I think it must’ve been in my baby bottle.  Both my parents are coffee addicts – there wasn’t even a chance for me to hate coffee!

@pokie45:  @MissCalifornia:  @lovekiss:  @madteaparty:  I thought I was the only one who started young! But I blame my mother (kidding!… kind of)… When she made her coffee in the morning, she would always make me “Kid Coffee” which was basically creamer, milk, sugar and a splash of coffee (for color, mostly); the “splashes” became cups, I put milk out of it completely, and now drink it black. I was addicted by high school :/

When I first began drinking coffee around 5th grade it was instant with lots of milk and sugar, so I liked it. I didn’t drink coffee again until I was about eighteen. My tastes fluctuate, though. I usually go between liking cream-two-sugars, then black every year or so.

If you’re trying to get used to it add something sweet and flavorful like chocolate syrup, a tab of Mexican hot chocolate, or flavored creamer. (I have always wanted to try the Almond Joy creamer but can’t find it in my local store, sigh.)
