Hi OP is it scabbed over yet? If not put ice on it, one cube until its half melted off for 15 mins and back on until its melted completely. put Abreva on it it’ll dry it out (the ice will reduce swelling). If you are really desperate put a tea bag soaked in warm water on it. Abreva five times a day will work miracles. I just had 8 cold sores at once and they are almost all gone its been four days.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR! I get them at least twice a year and found this trick over the summer. Put it on a cotton ball and apply it to the cold sore… mine are dried up within a couple of days! Hope it helps you too.

Abreva works wonders as well, but the vinegar is so much cheaper 🙂

I have a really strick set of rules when I have a cold sore.

I buy tea tree oil. This will dry it out but is natural. I apply that to a tissue or cotton ball and dry the crap out of it. There’s a bit of debate as to whether you should pop the blister. I personally do. I disinfect the area with tea tree oil then pop it and straight away put the oil back on. Burns like all hell but I find it works. Other people find popping it makes them spread.

I start taking L-Lysene (Sp?). On the bottle it says 1 pill per day but I was told by the pharmisist to take 1 an hour! I’m pretty sure that it’s one of those things that once your body has enough it just expells the excess. I find that really helps. If I’ve had a really bad one I actually alternate with 1 one hour then 2 the next hour. This ‘kills’ the sore from the inside.

I’m not sure if it’s available in the US but I also use Carmex lip balm. This is really helpful when you can’t have the white cream on your lip or can’t sit holding the oil on.

I have also used the white cream (whatever brand) but find that can be hit or miss. 18 days is plenty of time to get rid of it!! Also remember not to kiss your Fiance. They are highly contagious!

Hi, I wrote this out on another post but this really helps me out. I get them when my stress level is through the roof so I understand.

You can take supplements to help heal it faster. I am able to buy these at the grocery store as well as pharmacies, they should all be within the vitamin section. L-Lysine is an amino supplement, in 1000mg tablets it can be taken up to 3x a day each day until it heals. (note: you can also take one 1000mg tablet a day everyday as a preventitive)

While you have the outbreak, taking Vitamin C(500-1000mg) and Zinc(50mg) tablets also helps. You can buy Vitamin E oil it’s really good for your skin in general. I tend to use this at night before bed – use a cotton swab to put the oil on the sore. It will protect it, soothe the ache/itch and also speed the healing. If you can’t find it as a bottled oil, you can buy the capsules and open one up to use each time.

I find these to be cheaper than buying Abreva, Carmex, etc. Also, I’m less embarassed at the store as to what I’m buying if it’s crowded. Sometimes I don’t even want to leave the house! I’ve been using them for 3 years and I find they really help. The outbreaks are almost completely healed or even gone within 4 days.

@summerxq:  yes it was horrible it was a reaction to being extremely sick. now that it hasn’t scabbed over is the best time to ice it. and keep icing it! Cold sores are such a pain but it is possible to get rid of them. Oh something else I forgot… YOGURT! Eat yogurt I know that sounds weird but it actually works in making it smaller.

@summerxq:  abreva works wonders for me. it’s like $18 for a tiny bottle, but it works.

can’t get it where i live now, so i’ve learned that putting rubbing alcohol on the sore (not when the abreva is on, obvi) works, too. pat it on gently. it kills the grossness living in there and helps the swelling go own. applying ice helps, also.

Get VALTREX!!!! It works miracles!! It is only really effective at the first sign of the cold sores but I used to find once I had one coldsore they would spread and another would appear a few days later. So you want to have it on hand in case this happens. Also, stress is one of the number one things that causes cold sores. Obviously hard not to stress 18 days before your wedding which is why you absolutely need valtrex. I got cold sores for 18 years before I discovered valtrex and they would last about 10-14 days because I would always get a second one. Since valtrex got in my system I RARELY get them and when I do they only last about 2 days. Amazing!!!

Take the vitamin lysine 2-3 times a day. I’d also see your doctor. Try not to stress out, drink or go tanning. These all contribute to it. I got it on my nose once. It was the worst! Good luck 🙂

I used to have really bad cold sores due to my terrible immune system. I’ve tried prescription, lysine, abreva, etc everything! The ONLY thing that consistently and effectively works is Burt’s Bee Doctor Res-Q Ointment. I swear it’s the best thing you can ever use for cold sores on the lips. It’s all natural, made from plant and herbal oils, intended to be used as a natural “neosporin” but is amazing amazing on cold sores

https://m.burtsbees.com/other/best-sellers/res-q-ointment.html

The way it works is it immediately exposes and disinfects your cold sore and heals it quickly. Since you already have a cold sore, the best thing you can do is to damage the virus, then heal the wound quickly. It seriously works, you can get it from REI, most drugstores that offer Burt’s or Nordstrom Rack also sells it near me. Amazon has a decent price but it comes in a set of 3.

it heals cold sores in a week or so, leaving no scars. AdditionallY use it daily as a lip balm to prevent cold sores. I haven’t had a cold sore in years And I use this daily.
