I’d let them pick their own colors.  They are not part of the bridal party so they don’t need to match.

@kbiceling: Erm, you’re kidding me. Right? Unless they’re bridesmaids, ushers or groomsmen, let them pick their own clothes.

It would be nice to have all the family matching (for the photos) but it’s not necessary.

Your family are not part of the wedding party and should not be expected to coordinate. You will really not be taking that many formal photos with them and when you do, the colors really won’t make the shots look bad–just like when you take photos with your guests during the reception.

Our families have all discussed this recently and they have decided to wear colors that coordinate with our wedding colors. So, we are not specifying exactly what they should wear, but they would prefer to wear colors that won’t be wildly different from our wedding colors (no red tie in a sea of blue, for example).

There are a lot of pretty colors that would look nice with your wedding colors, so I don’t know if you need to limit it to blue and gray, but it’s up to you and your family.

ETA: I meant they are wearing colors that complement, not necessarily coordinate, with our wedding colors.

I voted to let them choose, although I asked my mom and Future Mother-In-Law to wear plum, one of our wedding colors.  They both asked me what I wanted them to wear and were super excited about being part of the color scheme.

ETA We aren’t having a wedding party.

@kbiceling:  though the main reason I’m concerned is I don’t want end up with a sister or two in a really short dress.

That’s a style issue then, not color

I would hope that your sisters would pick wedding-appropriate attire.  I’m sure you don’t have anything to worry about. Smile

I’m not sure how telling them what color to wear would solve this problem. Unfortunately, you cannot dictate what adults wear. i’ve been married twice and my aunt wore inappropriately short party dresses to both… oh well.

The color probably will not exempt the sisters from short dresses though!

I think your mom’s dress should complement your wedding colors (but not necessarily match).  And your Future Mother-In-Law should reach out to your mom to make sure they don’t clash or wear the same thing!  I don’t think it matters that much about your siblings though!

@kbiceling:   hmmm. .  .what’s to keep her from buying a blue bandage dress that hits mid-thigh? Wink

(and I feel your pain.  We have a few youngins coming and I’m bracing myself for their club wear lol)
